I woner if anyone can clarify the law relationg to private sales of previously imported cars.

When a car has been a parallel import and imported by a company such as motorpoint, is it nessary to state that it was originally imported in such a way when the car is sold on by the private seller?

Surely its a good thing to say an official importing company imported the car and not yourself? Gives the buyer more satisfaction that the neccessary work to get it legal for these roads has been done, and that it was sourced from a decent location.

There are no laws specifically governing the sale on of 2nd hand imports, but I'd agree with Rik, mentioning the fact it's been imported professional is a good thing. As is mentioning it is an import in the first place. Generally Japanese imports are in better condition than UK equivalents, and more often that note, have better, Japanese only, options.

There's no obligation to tell a buyer anything.

The fact that a private individual has imported a car isn't necessarily a bad thing. Equally, there are some big import companies around who have a terrible reputation.

From the point of view of a private seller who imported the car themselves, why would they want to pay a small fortune to a middle man if they're prepared to do the necessary work themselves?

The MoT and ESVA should ensure that any such car is road legal and safe.
