Forester Turbo S - Performance Upgrades
Discussion
The S Turbo has the 2.0L WRX Engine so similar if not same spec. I think it's the same TD04 turbo therefore Snorkus Mod, Performance Green Flat Panel Air Filter, Quick engine map and if you can stretch to it single cat SS Exhaust and decat SS uppipe. That should see 280bhp. If you upgrade the fuel pump and plumb in an adjustable fuel pressure regulator you should see 300bhp with a more agressive map. Leave the Turbo alone bearing in mind standard engine internals ( remember it's not an STi) as it's good for 300-320bhp at the limit, maybe a bit more.
Leave the suspension alone for a more involving drive

There is nothing wrong with changng the Turbo to a VF34 or VF35, as long as you have a good mapper will prove to be reliable. Leave the suspension alone for a more involving drive

It's only a WRX engine and a VF34/35 turbo will be running a lot more boost than you really want, not to mention the lag compared to the TD04. Foresters aren't exactly light and surely what you're looking for from a heavy car like that is plenty of mid range performance and as little lag as possible for good motorway or overtaking ability. You could turn the boost down a bit on the VF34/35 but what's the point of strangling a good turbo.
Stick with the TD04 it's good enough for a Forester, and good enough to put out pretty decent reliable performance. Also the injectors are 380cc blue and theoretically they are good for about 300bhp max although i'm sure you can squeeze a bit more out of them with a high pressure fuel pump running at 3.5 - 4.0bar. TD04's produce good power up to 5800rpm...thereafter it tails right off. The VF34/35 is just starting to come into it's own at about 4500rpm right up to the redline so it's all about top end power, which IMHO isn't what you're looking for from a Forrester S turbo. It's never going to be an STi.
To be honest i wouldn't want to go much beyond 300/320 bhp in my WRX with std internals because i use it daily and want the engine to last. I get all my power at low to mid range with the mapping i've done, and with all 3 cats in place, and that's good enough to show a std STi a clean pair of heals.
I don't think upgrading the Turbo is the way to go on that, not to mention it won't be cheap either.

2005 on 2.0L Forrester's have the TD04, same as the 2.5's, pre-2005 it is the TD035, but in it's own right it's a good little turbo and will still push 12-14psi and give 250 - 260 bhp with all he other mods. The TD04 is good for 18-20psi standard and you should see 300 - 320bhp. There's still a little matter of injector duty probably running near 100% in which case you need to change injectors as well.
It's a Forrester with softer suspension and brakes than even a WRX!! How much power do you really want out of that and do you really want to be up on two wheels everytime you decide to push it round a tight fast bend. Also, how much money do you really want to spend on mods. If you want to keep the cost reasonable play with what you have.
It's a good crusing car and surely you want swift motorway progress and the odd mild blatt down some B roads now and again rather than out and out B road madness all the time, making your passengers sick as dogs over the back seat.
If you want the practicality of the Forrester with the excellent handling and pace of the WRX get a Sportwagon, that's what i did

Pah!
Buy a Forester and mod the hell out of it!
Mine is a JDM S/tb with allegedly 260bhp as standard (about 220bhp on UK fuel)
It's been lowered and has KYB adjustable shocks. Brakes are EBC discs and pads.
Performance air filter, straight though centre section and backbox (gives about 10-15bhp extra).
It is not a wobbly old barge and it's chuffin quick. The reason I bought it rather than an Impreza is the stealth factor. Nobody knows what the hell it is.
Do it, you know you want to.

Oh and for some very biased opions try http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/forumdispl...

What do you run it on? There is no way you would drop 40bhp unless its running on some horrific fuel!
Always run on V Power. The Japanese way of measuring BHP is slightly different to the European way. Apparently they have different test standards and correction factors. Add this to that fact that is should be run on 100 RON fuel gives a 40 BHP drop.

PS Wheels are 17 inch Rota Boosts BTW
