Hi There.

It's time for tyres again!

23,000 miles (8 months) and I am up for a full set this time. My car has Pirelli Rosso's all round, fronts are still the ones from the factory (having that polybush and setup from Monkfish really paid off).
Rears... Well this will be my 4th set.

Does anyone have any advice to a change of make?

What's your experaince of tyre life over cost etc. I don't want to spoil the feel of the car and I am not looking for cheap, but if theres a better option? well I am happy to give it a try.

I would value your practical experiance.

I would go for Continental sport sport contact 3, loads of grip in dry & wet, high load rating (as needed by the Monaro) and good wear rates.

They come fitted as standard to Porsche and were significantly better than the P Zero rosso's I replaced on my VXR.

Fairly expensive however....

If you can find a copy of the current EVO still on the shelves they did a test of 6 of the main performance tyres. The new Goodyear Eagle came top and the Vredestein came second.

An interesting read, although it doesn't tell you how they suit the car of course.

I asked the same question of Monkfish about F1's instead of Pirelli's, which they advised the Monaro is set up for Pirreli's

I understand that you need high load tyres for the Monaro which gives you three options Pilot Sport, Contentintal SC and Pirelli Rosso.

Surely if it's Y or extra load rated its okay. There are plenty of other high load rated tyres out there, Vredestein, Falcon, Toyo, even P Zero Nero's etc.

Is there something about load ratings I am not aware of ?

The "Y" is just for speed and not load.

For example: 275/35 ZR 19 96 Y - the "96" is the load index (in this case 618kgs)

so you could have a Y spec tyre designed for lightweight cars that would not be suitable.

Yes sorry, getting them mixed up, I think the standard is 93Y for 19'' rims so plenty of choice out there.

I tried Toyo Proxes for a while, but I'm moving back to P Zero Rosso's. The Monaro's handling does seem susceptible to tyre load rating. Even though the Proxes had a 93Y rating & I'm on 19" rims, the back of the car moved around more than it used to.

I'm running Pilot Sports, and so far they have proven to be good.

I'm running Dunlop SP Sport Maxx in the standard VXR size. They've been absolutely superb so far.

Email recieved from Monkfish

Hi Andrew

We don’t normally sell anything other than OE spec tyres anymore.

The reason for this is that the OE tyres have very stiff sidewalls. Replacement with alternative tyres usually siginficantly compromises handling as under hard cornering, the tyres will “roll over”. In particular at the rear, this can be quite scary! Gives the impression the car is sliding which you then try to correct, but its not really and you veer off the other way!!

Regards

Roger

I was trying to get Vredestein's Ultrac but not many places supply and not as many discounts out there. The Falken 452's seem to be highly recommended by everyone that's actually used them.

Do you guys rate them as highly as the 'big name' alternatives. They are are certainly a LOT cheaper !!

In a word yes, I like the way they feedback lack of traction, possibly better than OEM fitment IMAO

I'll second that
I can only compare what I had on the 350z.
OEM in this case was Bridgestone RE040s...terrible IMO
Falkens proved to be much better in the wet and were stiffer. They seemed harder wearing too, which would perhaps tie in with why they were better in the wet. I had done 4k on my last set before selling and when I looked at them there were little signs of wear.
