Just as a matter in interest how many people have had a modified chip fitted to their cars?

I'm not talking about an Emerald upgrade, but rather a swapped out chip with new maps etc. on a standard MBE unit.

I know of a couple of varients floating about but wondered what was available, also who has the know how to write new chips, and can it be done on the fly with a RR session?

Thanks

Tim

If you want a bespoke map, your nearest mapper would be Austec, apart from them there's TCS. It's generally reckoned not to be worth the effort for the 4.2 though as the standard map is good (unlike the 4.5).

I understand that, but surely if you have modified heads and wilder cams then a remap would be befeficial to get the most out of the set-up?

Or, is it considered that the Adaptives can accomodate such changes?

You are always best going for a live re-map. Every engine is different and any mods can make a difference. You may not get massive, or indeed any more power but the whole package will just run right together. Makes everything smooth and efficient. You can also alter the cooling temp setting for the fans at the same time.

I use a fella called Mark Hardy at AutoMark. He has set up my BDA by good old fashioned methods and also my Integrale with magic and lap tops. He is up in North East England so possibly a ride out for you?

Cheers
Dave

The adaptives will correct the fuelling back to lambda=1 at throttle site 10 and below and under 4000rpm, but won't have any effect on larger throttle openings or at higher revs, it's a cat-protection / emmissions thing.

The cam more than anything else dictates the characteristic of the engine so if you've had cam changes then remapping will be worthwhile as the fuelling slope and ignition requirements will both have changed with a cam change.

As Steve says above, on std 4.2 cars remapping isn't of great benefit, in fact on std cars i refuse to do it because it's such poor value for money .. much like the way i approach the SP6 mapping .. however once you start taking your car away from std spec then the benefits of remapping become more important.

What spec is your car in exactly?

If you've made modifications then I agree the map could well be out. The adaptives only work when the ECU is running closed loop, so below certain revs and throttle openings. Go open loop and the fuelling is fixed (bar small adjustments for battery voltage, temp and so on). I'd suggest that the best thing to do would be to assess how good a fit the current map is by running the car up on rollers with the relevant diagnostic tools attached and go from there.

Thanks,

My past experience of 'live' tuning has either involved twin SUs, DellOrtos or Webbers, swapping out chokes, air tubes and jets on the rolling road.

My 300zx runs a remapped Mines ECU but even that was an 'off the shelf' item.

Obviously I want to get the optimum set-up for my car

Cheers guys,

I've phoned Charlie to get the car on the rolling road to get a idea of what it's doing at the moment, it's had a few tweeks, it's running smooth as silk, but I'd be very interested to know the figures. Charlie is blatting around Germany so I won't get it on his RR until next week at the earliest.

Jooles - You into Spits' as well? Fantastic introduction into how to tune cars. I gradually built mine upto race-spec, or near enough. Whilst keeping the externals standard. biggrin Twin 40s, hi-lift cam, ported-polished-skimmed head, extractor manifold etc. etc. fantastic fun. yes BTW<- can I send this cooling chip back for you to check? I meant to have a chat with you about it at the track day evening, but I got a bit carried away blatting around Brands. wink

Hi Tim .. yes send anything back lol. Yup got a 1963 Spit4 .. parents bought it for me when i was 14 for 60 pounds which with hindsight was 59 pounds too much haha. rebuilt it over the next 2 years and drove it at school whihc was pretty cool until my mate bought a Celica 1600GT with flared arches hehe

Still got the Spit4 and had i think 7 others through the years in various states of tune, never a 1500 though. Great fun, good to se you have one smile

Ohhh. a Mk1 <-- nice (does show that you're an annorack, calling it a Spitfire 4 wink) biggrin Our 1500 is sitting in a lock-up awaiting it's 2nd body restoration! Just have too many 'projects' on the go.

Back on topic - I assume from the fact that you supply the cooling chip, that you can write MBE chips?

Guess I need the RR results to see what's going on. scratchchin

I still say its best to be live mapped in the car and on rollers. Every engine is slightly different, especially TVR ones!

N1CERB You clearly are a man of good taste. BDA escorts are my all time no1, that must be worth a bob or two now, great to see it on your profilesmilebow
