"What's new" is slow

Since I changed to Big Blue I've noticed "What's New" - what a smashing feature for wasting a day ... or more! Having said that, it's very slow. "3" is much quicker - I'm guessing that's because it only lists topics posted within the last three hours.
So ... is "What's New" really necessary? I'm guessing that as it takes so much longer to load my end, it must be making a big-ish demand your end.

It does make a slightly bigger demand, but I think it is useful for those people that have been off the site for a longer period, regardless of the slight delay in loading.
