Passat Steering Column Lock Defective

2005 2 litre Passat failing to start and following being displayed on dash "Steering Column Lock Defective"

AA failed, has to be recovered am, anyone any ideas?

Now rectified, Immobiliser / convenience unit and steering column electronic lock replaced. Key set to new unit. Now all ok all done under warranty. Must be honest more than happy with main dealer response.

VW Passat steering column lock defective....
unfortunately my car, a 2006 with less than 70,000 km on the clock has the same problem, but VW say they cannot help me, out of warranty and not a full dealer history, as i am left with an invoice of over €1500 you can be sure that I WILL NEVER BUY A VW again.
Are there any other people out there with the same situation as me?
I have heard this is a common problem, I think VW should help, or at least recall the cars.
