Richard,

You'll find some examples of running costs here:

Tyres are around 400 quid a set (so2's, p0's, or advan neovas), Lotus servicing/labour costs 75quid and hour plus parts, fuel consumption is around 38mpg, insurance ranges from around 800 quid to ridiculous sums but expect to pay around a grand.
If you buy one that is a couple of years old it'll have gone past the worst depreciation stage, and will have had all the poxy niggles that every car comes out the factory with sorted.
Don't buy a standard model - you will be wanting for more power as soon as you are used to the car, there are lots of flavours (111s, sport160, sport135 e.t.c), but there are also lots that have been upgraded from standard (like mine).

To be honest the elise is probably no more expensive to run than a decent saloon car and is heaps more fun.

I'm amazed at the prices that people are being quoted for Insurance. I've just insured my Elan M100 for £630 thats for business use and 15,000 miles.

I asked for a quote only a couple of years ago from another firm for an Elise (out of interest and was quoted £450) They can't have gone up that much surely? Could it be that you have a modded car which has pushed the premium up?

I was insured pre-mods with Norwich union direct for 680 quid, but after mods they wouldn't touch me. Over the last year premiums seem to have taken a hike, and the 1,000 quid comment was arrived at from numerous insurance posts on the British Cars BBS.
