Discussion
I have just had some Avo front shocks fitted and they squeek. I spoke to the garage that fitted tham who tell me this is a common problem with Avo's and that there may be a problem with the pistons. I have had Avo's on the rear of the car for two years without any issues. Has anyone else had any problem with them or got any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike.
Thanks,

Speak to the people who make them. They were very helpful when I had a question.

I know Proven Products very well and they don't actually make things.http://www.proven-products.co.uk/products/avo-susp...
They are good people to deal with though, if you call them speak to Kev and ask him if my Red Stuffs for the rear are in yet?

On the subject of AVOs, I had the older version on my 95 400 and the newer ones on the 500. No problems with either.
Squeaking shocks are generally just oil going through the footvalve too fast, I would have a word with Avo I'm sure they would sort it out for you.
I get the odd Gaz shock doing it as well so if anybody has a problem, give me a call and I'll deal with it.
I should say in Gaz's case that they have just redesigned the components in the lower chamber and have agreed to test them full range on the dyno to ensure that noisy shocks don't get on cars.

I have just had them lubricated and adjusted for my new tyre size. The sqeak went for the journey home until I got to my estate speedhumps and once again they started sqeaking. AAAHHH !
I've just received an email from Avo who advise I grease the poly bush mounts and check they aren't overtightened. I have now sprayed them with white grease and on pushing the front of the car up and down the sqeak has gone. I will test it later on my way to work, fingers crossed.
Thanks for the advice all.

Result, a little white grease seems to have cured the squeak ( I've also managed to spell it right at last )
I've just read some of the Avo debate and don't want to go there. I'm going to get my Bilsteins rebuilt just in case I need a spare set. £70 each sound about right?
Thats about what I paid for a rebuild in NZ so sounds about right, see if you can get them regassed to a firmer setting, although you'll need to find a aftermarket shock with a ride you like so they can replicate.I've just read some of the Avo debate and don't want to go there. Oh sh#t that was short lived. The squeak is back. I am a little puzzled that lubricating the bushes stops the squeak for a few days and then it returns. If it were the pistons or oil going through the footvalve too fast why would it stop squeaking when I spray the bushes, even though short lived.
I have spoken to Avo who have offered to test the damper however the car is my only car and is needed daily so returning the offending item without a replacement is not an option. What next?

Ensure that the the bushes were tightened with the weight of the car on them, ie. with a jack under the lower swivel, rather than on full droop. Certainly important to do this on standard bushes to prevent over stessing the bush under full droop/rebound conditions, not sure how relevant with poly but worth checking. Good luck with it.

take the shock right off and apply copper grease to all the bolts and sleeves.
Put it back and only torque it up when the car is back on the floor ( tricky this one, I usually load up that corner with the trolley jack and a big bit of wood so I can get to the bolts with the wheel off.
