Just a quick rant/observation. Could'nt help but notice a rear nearside tyre being completely as bald as a badgers bum on the trailer of an huge artic lorry. He stopped at traffic lights on the a14 and as I pulled alongside in the nearside lane there it was in all its bald glory! God knows what the rest of the condition of the vehicle was in. A14 is overloaded with these overseas vehicles and yet I have never seen an roadside check point in the area. Makes me growl when I consider this and how the wallet is loaded against Brit' lorries.mad

Rant over.

In my previous life I was doing 65,000 mainly motorway miles a year, and the drivers who caused me most fear were always East European registered. They seem to be taught manoevre, signal mirror!

No doubt it would be classed as descrimination, but it would be nice to see the Police target vehicles brought in by East Europeans. Right outside my flat now, there's a Polish registered 1990s MR2 Turbo with 2 rear tyres down to the canvass, and it's been that way for about 3 months!

Phone the police and report it, give location, registration, make & colour, and details of "problem"

I can confirm that more & more HGV's are being stopped for checks on a regular basis, normally on motorways where they can stop them into a VOSA station, or HGV holding point etc.

It's unusual that there is anywhere suitable to do stop checks on HGV's in a town, so that's why you'll not see it done.

Why not do it at the Port. Plenty of space at the docks and if the vehicle is defective it never gets on our roads.

Don't worry, They have just spent £2.5million on a new system of SPECS cameras on the A14, so all will now be safe there!

This could be the reason so many lorries are involved in accidents on the A14.

I don't understand either why lorries coming into the country aren't given a basic safety check/weighbridge check on entry.

the cost of a team to do this couldn't be that much, especially if you factor in the cost of the accidents they cause.

Yep, it is descrimination - two of my neighbours cars are have bald tyres and fecked brakes. Surprise, surpise, both of them are English. I think it would be nice if the Police would target all vehicles which were faulty in one way or another. What about the illegal mini-cabs coming out of the East End in London? Or they were brought in the country by Polacks too?

Whoa there neddy!

Who said people with English registered cars don't neglect them, too?

All I would argue is that a greater percentage of vehicles entering the UK from Eastern Europe are not roadworthy than those in the British monitored system.

Or are you not allowed to target likely groups?

What would the do to them? Its not a uk registered vehicle, so no chance to trace them. They just play dumb and not speak English. No space in prison to lock them up, free food. Crush it? They fly home and buy another! And as for the uk cars, cameras and red tape don't catch them.

Why do you have to trace them when you can pull them over and speak face to face? If the vehicle isn't safe to drive there and then, prohibition order time. No ID? Get them arrested until ID is established.

If someone chooses to fly all the way home to pick up another car when they can buy one here for £100, more fool them.

There seems to be a recurring theme on here at the moment with one or two people- if it's difficult to Police, just don't bother. rolleyes

Quiet a few are working here, so an address here, to me, would show that they should be aware of our rules? That could then be used to crush vehicle and send them back to country of origin? They don't by uk plated cars for this reason, uk address means they can be found. It needs to be done at point of entry, turn them around there, refuse them entry. I agree that some people don't want to police this issue as its to hard, they need a slap for that! Move all the vosa agents to our ports and tunnel, use them in conjunction with customs and police. Clamp down from these points and work outwards, 5 years no problems?

I don't think carrying ID with you at all times is yet a part of UK law. If it doesn't apply to UK citizens, then it can't apply to other Europeans under the EU law.
The police really don't want to get involved in a 'no win' situation. If they arrest a foreigner, they have to pay for an interpreter, allow him/her to contact their embassy, arrange legal representation, arrange a bail hearing (maybe) and fill in reams of paperwork. That wastes time and money for which the operational officers have to account to the 'bean counters'. So, you are right, they don't bother, and who can really blame them.

If you start at the point of entry surely you wouldn't need to go through embassies etc? Just turn them around? I'd cards, wouldn't need to worry about that, they have passports? I would hazard a guess that the customs guys would have interpritors around to help? The police wouldn't have to get involved.

Which can easily be bypassed by most of us who drive (drove) it regularly and who know the alternative route. Even funnier is that the alternative has proved to be about 10 minutes faster than the pre SPECS A14, let alone what it is like now!
