Correct pronounciation
Discussion
I think I'm just about to buy a 96 Starmist Green Chimaera 400(subject to test drive- haven't driven one yet!) and thought I ought to know how to pronounce the name!
For years I've been pronouncing it Kimeera ie the Ki bit sounding like the first bit of Kite, but now I see that everyone calls them "Chim" I'm beginning to wonder if I've got it wrong?
Thanks chaps

I've always pronounced it ki - mare - ra
ki as in "kit"
mare as in the horse
ra as in "rat"
Just looked it up in Chambers dictionary and spelt "chimera" - Greek mythology: a fire breathing monster with the head of a lion, the body of a goat and the tail of a serpent. From Greek "khimaira" (she goat) but some of you clever fellows probably knew that already
Unfortunately it does not say how it should be pronounced!

A bit odd. You can spell it that way (and US English always spells it like that), but "Chimaera" is the more common English spelling. Pronunciation is with a hard "c" ... it's the greek letter "chi".The interweb is a wonderfull thing. Look what I found:

Thats all greek (or should it be geek) to me, but thank god our car wasn't named after a sheep 'herder' from the Valleeeeys. I know I'm wasting my time its way past their bed times
Interestingly: Grippiud .. Griffudd .. Gruffudd .. Griffith
Dave
PS: (thats a clue in itself) I have had a "who makes those then?" from one of our esteemed fellow members

Regardless of the etymology and the pronounciation of the original Greek word, the TVR car of the same name is generally accepted to be pronounced "k'eye-MEER-uh" (k'eye as in eye), emphasis on the second syllable.ki as in "kit"
mare as in the horse
ra as in "rat"

Unfortunately it does not say how it should be pronounced! My brother-in-law seems to think it is kim-er-AH (said almost like 'camera'). He is wrong.
