Was just thinking about this today, assuming Alonso goes back to Renault who is most likely for the 2nd Mclaren seat?

Ferrari: Raikkonen/Massa --Confirmed
Mclaren: Hamilton/
BMW: Heidfeld/Kubica -- Confirmed
Renault: Alonso/Kovalainen
Toyota: Trulli/
Williams: Rosberg/
Honda: Button/Barrichello --Confirmed
Red Bull: Coulthard/Webber --Confirmed
Super Aguri: Davidson/Sato
Toro Rosso: Bourdais/Vettel --Confirmed
Spyker: ?/?
Prodrive: De la Rosa/Paffett

Hmmm....not that simple...

Ferrari: Raikkonen/Massa --Confirmed (unless they swop Massa out for an Alonso/Kimi superteam but thats doubtful.)

BMW: Heidfeld/Kubica -- Confirmed

Renault: Alonso/Kovalainen -- More likely to be Alonso/Piquet or Kovalainen/Piquet

Toyota: Trulli/Perm one from Glock/Massa/Kovalainen/Fisichella

Williams: Rosberg/Whoevers got a really big cheque judging from todays Telegraph. And of course Ron really wants Rosberg and Frank might be willing to sell.

Honda: Button/Barrichello --Confirmed-- Who else is going to drive that pile of pooh?

Toro Rosso: Bourdais/Vettel --Confirmed-- yep cast in stone....unless Ron wants Vettal as the German press are suggesting today.

Spyker: ?/? -- Don't know, don't care. Liable to have big cheques

Prodrive: De la Rosa/Paffett. After todays news will they even be on the grid?

Red Bull: Coulthard/Webber --Confirmed-- Unless Alonso becomes free.

Super Aguri: Davidson/Sato -- unless someone comes around with a massive cheque or Ron wants Davidson.

And heres the problem;

Mclaren: Hamilton/?????? It could be:
1.) Kovalainen swapies for Alonso.
2.) Coulthard swapies for Alonso.
3.) Rosberg if Frank wants to sell.
4.) Vettal if Red Bull wants to sell.
5.) Davidson if Super Aguri wants to sell.
6.) Parfett or De La Rosa now the Prodrive deal has gone belly up.

Who knows?

Contracts are only contracts in F1 until a double World Champion suddenly comes on the market. smile

yes Although he would be welcome to drive the safety car while on gardening leave...

I don't see Rosberg leaving Williams... because Frank knows that he needs to look serious about winning again, and cashing in on Rosberg would just prove that they're still on a downward slope.

And I do see Alonso in a silver car next year... Certainly, he wouldn't want to race in Ferrari with Kimi because he'd be in the same position as he is now! He wants to be a number one driver, but I doubt that he'd be back in a Renault if he wants to win, so where is the option?

Maclaren - Hamilton/Rosberg

Frank needs the money, Nico ticks a good number of boxes for McMerc given his german nationality and his language skills.

i don't think BMW would be very happy with vettel going to mclaren as they'd probably struggle to get him back again, and at the mo they have an option on him for '09 which they will want to keep strong.

rons dilemma is that, as much of an idiot as alonso seems to be, there is no-one close to him in terms of ability i don't think.

maybe give fisi a ridiculously low salary and just back lewis for the '08 title?

Until this year I would have agreed with you, but his testing work has been pretty good this season. He'll be gutted if he doesn't land a decent race seat for '08

The general feeling seems to be that Keke Rosberg wouldn't really want his son in a team next to Hamilton- they came through the kart years together and Lewis did rather a lot better.
