Tuscan Engine Rebuild - share your experiences
Discussion
Sorry to hear the bad news jilapau i know all too well how it feels, sorry i can't give you any advice because i had all three of my rebuilds done at the factory, and it didn't cost me a penny, I personally would try to get my rebuild done at TVR Power when it goes again ( or is that if it goes again ) good luck.
My rebuild was done 2000 miles ago by an indie that is now out of business and it was done so badly that I put it in for another rebuild with a reputable dealership. Unfortunately, the so called rebuilt engine is so badly damaged it is un-rebuildable!
I have just bought a 4.0 ltr 2006 engine out of a damaged Tuscan 2 with 900 miles on the clock for £5000 from a breaker. That includes starter motor, alternator, ECU, Loom and clutch as well.
£5000 for another engine is a lot less than the first rebuild cost me and I should be able to sell all the duplicate bits I don't need.
Worth considering as an alternative to a re-build if there are any engines out there.

You have 5 or 6 places to choose from if you do require a rebuild.
cant see how that can be substantiated. Or is it only 5 or 6 because they say they are "TVR specialists".When you hear that it should be your queue to run a mile.
TVR specialists is a secret code meaning
1/ Empty ones wallet
2/ Bullshit you and treat you like an idiot
3/ rebuild the engine with total incompetence
4/ make you wait an eon and make it look as if they are
doing you a favour

Of course what YI8 TVR is implying is that it is a simple engine and you don't need to take it to a so-called TVR specialist to get it done.
Over to you YI8 TVR.

Tony Cants story typifies my point, you can bet your bottom dollar that the indie in question quoted himself to be a "TVR specialist".
When my engine eat itself I lurked on hear talked to people but was not convinced with what I read or heard especially the quotes I was getting, Craft especially. I waited and waited until I was happy letting someone loose on my engine. It was only when someone with heaps of knowledge spoke to me about an engine builder up North that all became clear.
All it is is a straight 6 cylinder otto engine that any good engine builder should be able to strip and rebuild with his eyes closed.

I'm not with or against YI8TVR on this, if I was in the unlucky position of requiring engine work, I would certainly be shopping around.
I am not technical when it comes to engines. What I would like to know in more detail is:
- what is involved in a rebuild. Which components should be checked?
- should I be considering any upgrades at the same time?
- after the rebuild should I expect to have a 2007 spec S engine? Anyone know the differences between a 2001 and a 2006/7 spec S engine?
Your response Whitey seems to suggest that I am being a bit sharp. My apologies for my keyboard prowess I'm certainly not a keyboard warrior.
Let me put it another way to all of you who are or will be requiring a rebuild. You can buy a 500hp small block including shipping for around £6000. Now look at what a rebuild costs which does not include a block, head and quite a few other ancillaries for anything between £6000 and £18000 depending on who you use plus fitting.
I don't know about you but to me something does not quite add up here.
Shop around and be weary of the engine builder who says he's a "TVR specialist" there's no such thing just good engine builders and crap ones and the shiny floor has to be paid for by somebody.
.
I am not in a position to say who the engine builder is or who put me onto them until I get there permission, purely because they might not want me too , but I will let you know what has been done, what it produces and what it cost in due course. I believe some may be quite shocked at how much I will get for so little, fingers crossed.

Yes I did think that, so no worries at all, we are both singing from exactly the same hymn sheet!I agree totally with what you say about costs in relation to TVR engine work. Keep us informed of your progress.
cheers
