Hi guys, looking at one of these as a serious replacement for my 156 v6. Was just wondering having looking on Parkers that they have a 0-60 time of 6.8 secs which is way off the v8 models time. Are there any owners on here that have one? I understand there not dragsters with the auto box, but does the performance justify the MPG? Do they still go with say 150k on the clock (assuming the car has no problems) I don't mind 20mpg as long as it shifts hwen needs be! Any opinions would be apreciated thanks! : - )

USED TO HAVE A XJR 4.0 V8 JOBBIE, RETURNED 12 MPG WHEN GOING FOR GOLD AND 15 HALF SENSIBLEY, 22 ON A RUN. SADLY YOU CAN'T HELP BUT NAIL THESE BASTAD'S BUT FUEL WAS NO DIFFERNT FROM A REGULAR XJ8. TRY AND GET A EARLY V8 WITH A FACTORY REPLACE ENGINE, NOT THAT MUCH MORE THAN A 6 CYL. BUT MASSIVE DIFFERNCE FROM 6 TO 8 CYL, YOU'LL CRAVE FOR AN EIGHT IN THE LONG RUN.

I have the XJR6, deceided the V8 had a few too many issues and the 6 had enough power for what I needed... it defies logic that something this big can propell you into starship mode sooo quickly and smoothly.

I'm sure the extra 50 ponies that come with the V8 are most useful but with the differing type of blowers used the 6 is more useable and will take more punishment if yer that way inclined.

mrs c went real medieval on me when I bought ours, she wanted a more practical run about something akin to a shopping trolley...nowadays i can barely get the keys from her

Brilliant, thanks! I'm going to look at one on Monday. Don't think i'll be looking for a cheap v8 now having looked at the various things a cheap v8 can throw at you (understand the 6's can have issues too!)

Absolutely, just as any Jag would/could and in some cases should have smile especialy older ones that haven't yet aquired a 'classic status'
that said though a 'sorted and straight' xjr6 puts you in the top 5% for performance and luxury motoring for just over 4k ...those figures seem to work for me wink

it is amusing to watch an s class or similar ubercruiser struggle to keep up during a bit of a spirited acceleration as do the expressions of the 'cockster crew' when you are all over them in a corner and growl out with the screw wailing cloud9

when I rule the world ALL Jaguars will be fitted with a Supercharger...Muhahahaha!!! evil

Exactly the same for me.

I chose a late XJR-6 as the safer bet. Mine's on 150k now; that engine is indeed bombproof. The popular view is that the interior, whilst more modern on the V8, is not as solid-feeling. I believe the suspension on the V8 is a little softer too.

They only made the XJR-6 for 2 years; the last of the line AJ16 engines, many say 'last of the true Jaguars'. Getting rare now though.

The V8 is too weak imho. First nikasil, then tensioners, and now the odd head gasket showing up too. The 5-speed V8 gearbox is superior, however, but the GM 4L80 in the 6 is fine and easy to get bits for (it's used in many high-torque applications, like the Bentley Turbo R I believe)*

I reckon you'll be happy with the performance compared to the 156 V6. I also have a (mildly tuned) Fiat Coupe 20VT, and a mate has a 156 like yours.
My Fiat is faster than both, but the Jag will beat the 156. You'll miss that fabulous Alfa engine note though. But you'll like the supercharger's turbine whine.

Apart from the usuals, one thing to check on any 6 cylilnder Jag is a high idle when warm. It should sit at about 800rpm in Park and 600-700 in gear. Putting this right, whilst easy on the n/a cars can be tricky on the XJR - it involves removing the throttle body to clean and it's tucked right away under the inlet manifold. Check the exhaust. The backboxes rot and the only cost effective way to replace the whole system is to go custom-made SS, budget around £800 for that.

  • Do wish I'd held out for a manual though. That would be awesome with the TC off!

Well went to go see the car today, and she's sold! Should have rang first but i like to suprise the seller (garage). Got to look at the car though. 187k but FJSH, drivers seat in good condition and brakes, exhaust & tyres etc all mint. Later v8 XJR wheels and very nice indeed, the mileage wouldn't have put me off as the car had been cared for and didn't look tired in the slightest. Never mind, the search continues. : - )
