Summer Placement
Discussion
I've tried posting this in 'Jobs' but haven't had any response. I hope I don't offend anyone by posting it in here so that I can get some more viewings as I know more people frequent this forum than 'Jobs'.
I'm a 20 year old Mechanical Engineering Student from University of Bath currently on a placement at Rolls Royce Motor Cars. I've done two years of my degree (a masters) and am currently on a first.
I'm happy with my current placement which ends in June but would like to try a city job (non-engineering related) for summer 2008.
Seeing as there is a large collective of people on here I might aswell ask, what does the company you work for do, and do they take on summer placement students from Mechanical Engineering degrees? I'm not too fussed about the industry at the moment as long as it's exciting and rewarding but ultimately I'm more interested in what is out there that I could have a go at. I'm more than willing to work hard and would like the experience of city life before I have to make a final career choice.
Any responses welcomed on here or to my email apb25@bath.ac.uk Many thanks, Arry.

2nd year here, just finishing my placement form (any hints for what to write to get a good automotive job?
)I understood that the decision is not at all final, finance will let you in after a few years and vice versa. Of course if you want to get the the top its best to stick at it, but I reckon I will do engineering for a few years (<10) then move over to finance when I get bored of accountants being the limit of what can be done rather than the laws of physics... (ok not as simple as that but you catch my drift)
I work for an investment bank. We've just said goodbye to our summer interns. They basically get two rotations (so about 4 weeks in two different departments). From the ones we saw come through the work they were given was valuable and not just something to fill their time. They were extremely well treated in terms of extra-curricular activities organised, and I think they'd get a hell of a lot from it. I think most banks offer a similar thing.
BTW - also an engineer (Chem Eng though) and also did a year (AstraZeneca) and summer (Esso) placement, before completing my MEng. Good luck with it.

How are you on a Masters? It thought Masters were Post Grad courses and not 4 year sandwich courses?
I went straight into the second year of a Masters from College.. there are courses out there that are fast track Masters courses for the right candidateG502 - MEng Computing Science iirc was mine.

Masters of Engineering is different to most (all?) other masters courses though. You don't do a 3 yr bachelors degree and then another year to get an Msc (or whatever) added on top. You either do a 3 yr BEng or 4 years to get an MEng.
But it was a science based course, it was computing science, you could either do the BSc or the MEng.. always confused me at the time, but I didn't think much more on it.J
It's a 5 year course in total, 4 years of lectures leading to a master's degree and a year of placement that i am on at the moment. I'm not too worried about deadlines yet, most are december/january. My only hurdle with quite a few of the places i'm looking at at the moment is that they only take on final summer students (i.e graduating 2009) whereas i will be graduating in 2010
