Lady Luck ran out today. Riding back having just had the Gixxer serviced, and got a tug from the BIB.

As an avid reader of SP&L, I am afraid they have me bang to rights. He told me that they clocked me 5 short of a maximum snooker break on an empty motorway.

Not that it makes me feel any better, but he did state that he would not pursue undue care and attention, dangerous or wreckless driving, as I had done nothing wrong in my riding apart from the excessive speed.

Just await the summons now........

Mate, what a nightmare. Sorry for ya...is it a done deal, or are there "mitigating circumstances"?

Unfortunately no mitigating circumstances - just trying to get home from a busy day out, and Mrs was waiting at home and I had the door keys. Not that I would use that as an excuse.

I was speeding - and that is it. Just wait for the court summons now

BIB said there would be a ban for it. I do not need licence for work - which is good and bad - depending on which way you look at it. But my work will not write a letter stating I need a licence.

To be fair to BIB - he was doing his job, and I was breaking the law. If it had been a camera - I would have a completely different outlook on this - but in the circumstances I have to take the punishment.

I am hopeful he will not mention the exact speed, as after I mentioned about having done Bikesafe - his attitude changed, and he said that he would be putting the summons in for excessive speed, and never mentioned the figure again. Then let me on my way.

I just hope it is dealt with quickly - I had a summons in October 2003, that took til June 2004 to reach court - and I was planning on a European tour next Summer

I'll be off to BSB at Brands tomorrow - and gonna have a few beers and hope England win the rugby tonight. Gonna try to enjoy the rest of the weekend and forget about it til I get the letter.

After the caution, the first question he asked me was how fast was I going.

I stated I have no idea as I was concentrating on the road and the conditions.

He said that I should think about what I am saying as I was under caution, and if I did not know what speed I was doing then I would be charged with driving without due care and attention! I said that I know I would have been over the speed limit, but I don't believe it was that much.

That is when he stated the speed that I was doing. I neither agreed or disagreed with his statement.

So thats 142mph right?
I cant understand why some of the posters on this thread are expressing sympathy towards you confused, you certainly dont get any from me,and i hope you get the book thrown at you in court.
Those sorts of speeds are madness on any road, you just dont have time to react if anything happens ahead of you.
People like you just get the rest of us bikers a bad name, and judging by your log-in name a few months on a pedal cycle might be just the thing you need.

He said that it was an empty motorway - no risk to anyone but himself.

Seriously though, what's worse - 55 in a busy 30 limit or 140+ on an empty motorway? the first one you'd walk with 6 points max & the later you're looking at a long ban atleast... but which poses the most danger to other motorists... judges should take this into consideration, but unlikely that they'll see sense & just the numbers.

Point taken, but an empty motorway wont cut any ice with the judge.
Was he not thinking about his own safety though? and the family and friends he will leave behind if he crashed his bike,he might have blown a tyre or got a bad tank slapper or similar, you might get away with it at 55 but at 142 youre dead meat.

... And in Germany, where there are far more 2 lane motorways with many less well designed junctions, this would have been an every day safe event. Why, on a better built stretch of empty road in the UK is it madness when in Germany it’s safe?

I've put on over 50k miles on bikes and ridden with 100's of people and I don't know anyone who doesn't press on. God even my dad does hehe

Sorry that you got caught, at least they didn't accuse you of any other offences.

Really sorry for you. This is typical of the Police - always hanging off bridges, lurking on slip roads etc. Yet, they're never around to catch the boy racers doing 60 in 30's or outside the local school which is a 30 and yet cars thunder past at 60. As per previous comments, the Germans have superb lane discipline and hoon down the autobahns yet there accident rate is low - probably because the Police know it's not a cash stream so concentrate on the built up areas as they should do.

Hope it all works out for you…

Bad news.....

To be fair to the copper, he's only doing his job. Given that the OP claims to have been doing twice the NSL, I think he's getting off lightly!

Who says its safe to ride at over 140mph on a german autobahn? Ive never said that.
Whats the problem here? This guy knows the speed limit on a UK motorway is 70mph but he got on his bike and chose to ride at 142mph.
Whether he was riding safely or not he would be aware of the consequences if caught by the police.
He decides to post his sob story on this forum (something which i certainly wouldnt have done if i was is his shoes)and ends up getting sympathy from nearly every other poster on this thread.
Sometimes i DO wonder which planet were ALL living on.
