If I was able to see 2 parallel universes one being this one and the other being slightly different the other is the LTI 20/20 was never made Tele-Traffic never marketed their kit, SCP were never born traffic cops stayed at the same level (as the good old days) only catching the Bad not Mr/s Average.

But I have seen in this parallel universe that the person who is closest to you was slowly killed in the wreckage of a car that was hit by Mr/s average. Who in this parallel universe were not persuaded by the present of Speed cameras to slow down?

They continued driving at speed they felt were ok, with the threat of being caught or prosecuted for such a minor crime being so little, the chance of detection so minor their diving habit stayed the same.

The question would be if you could choose which parallel universe we take you know the out come of both, as we are now, or millions of Mr/s averages zipping around and your minus your love one.

Which one are you going to choose?

Speed does not kill

Inappropriate speed for the conditions does

Laser vans do not slow vehicles down, they just issue a fine

Finally, emotion has no place in a structured argument about road safety.

You have made a base assumption that in your parallel universe the closest person is killed simply and only because of the lack of cameras and for no other reason whatsoever.

That is such a weighted assumption that I will give your question no further thought as it is not worthy of such. Good day.

Ah, but I am able to see the 3rd parallel universe where you don't exist and mr average is capable of driving within their limits at all times, and thus these 'accidents' never happen.

Unfortunately the government, being deprived of easy revenue, have created a tax on motoring forums, which is payable when any moron posts a stupid hypothesis.

I used to live in that parallel universe you mention.

In that paralell universe you could drive at up to 90mph on motorways and if stopped you would either get a flea in your ear or a ticket.
They would check your licence and if you had no endorsements they would probably let you go on your way without a problem. If you had speeding offences allready then they would assume you hadn't learnt your lesson and send you to court.
In that parallel univers you used to drive carefully and within reason but not neccessarily at the speed limit.
You would however never know where the next policeman would be round which corner so you never had the confidence that modern motorists have knowing that as long as they aren't on a busy trunk road they could speed with impunity because there weren't any fixed cameras and certainly no police.
In that old parallel universe people had respect for police and no respect for bad drivers.
Now bad drivers can bleat victimisation and the police have no respect.
In that old parallel universe drink drivers were stopped and so were drivers with defective lights. Tax discs were checked and disqualified drivers were stopped. MOT dodgers were found and bald tyred cars were penalised.
Now of course you can drive through a speed camera at less than the trigger speed and be off your head on drugs , pissed as a fart in a car with no working lights false plates and four bald tyres.

but that's progress and your hypothetical closest would no doubt welcome it?

I live in a different parallel universe, one where people understand statistics; one where people have a basic grasp of chaos theory; and one where people understand both Murphy's law and the law of unintended consequence.

Cameras HAVE NOT, DO NOT and NEVER WILL make the roads a safer place to drive.

Personally, if I had to leave my parallel universe, I'd move to the one mmm-five mentioned, where j_a_g didn't exist to ask stupid question and postulate about all things speed camera related.

yes
Ditto smile
I thought of an intelligent repost about a much more realistic 'alternate universe' where drivers primary concern was driving to the conditions rather than a number on a stick, however just a nod is now sufficient...!

Obviously these days it's perfectly fine to have a loved one killed on the roads so long as the accident happened within the speed limit.

Most of them do.

It's certainly not this universe if scameras could have a positive effect on road safety. rolleyes

I'd favour a parallel universe where there are NO arbitrary laws and people own their own actions.

I think the problem here is that some people talk about cameras because they haven't actually seen how things were before them.

They believe they must be the answer because they haven't actually seen the alternative in action.

I am old enough to know both systems in operation.

I have actually said in a previous post that some people may actually be shocked if cameras were removed and rather than knowing where cameras are and selectively slowing down they would be at risk instead on any road at any time.

Which certainly made you think when I was young.

which would be a good thing in many ways - for a start they might think & LOOK before pulling out/walking across the road.

So am I. But I am still finding it v diff to make the connection if it exists between camera placement and areas of risk.

And the inane (insane) ramping down of many NSL speed limits will do little to reduce the most prevalent cause of accidents - Inattentive driving.

Having driven a fair mileage I have yet to witness any accidents caused by excess speed. Seen plenty on motorways and good DCs caused by poor positioning and driving too close to other vehicles.

The ones I have seen/been involved in have been of the "looked but did not see" variety. People do seem to suffer from tunnel vision - keep your eyes on the speedo and the satnav and you'll be fine...
