Very annoyed - never received points before - just waiting for a letter to come in the post (although with postal strikes it could take a while!!!)

it was on the m25 heading towards gatwick from the M3.

Anyone have experience of these cameras, it flashed twice - was only doing 80 maybe slightly over but hardly anything!

It was on one of the overhead signs, really annoyed because there was no one on the roads, obviously at 5am, and was just doing a favour for my brother!!!

I got flashed by one a few miles before the M4 junction at 2am a few months back.

Did not hear anything. You may be lucky.

I've got an idea there's a camera out that way that flashes all the time. But I've not EVER heard of a single person first hand getting a ticket from those variable limit cameras.

My feeling is not to worry. But be sure and put me right if you get something.

IIRC those types of cameras are not type approved, so that is the angle to study if you do get anything.

I know someone very well who got three points a few years ago from the variable limit on the M25. He wasn't going too fast but still got the points so the cameras definitely work ! Was when the variable limit was showing IIRC.

I got flashed in the same area t'other night.

No illuminated signs, just waiting with crossed fingers!

I thought they only went live when there was a reduced speed limit?

I've heard similar, only live when a lower limit is in place. That and they're set to 96mph 'normally'.

I came back through there late last night at a fair old lick (probably about 0.8-0.85L) and never saw any flashes.

BE WARNED
The overhead cameras used to be the normal film however they are being changed over to digital not sure if its happened yet though. As for whether they only go live when on or not who knows. Personally i am seriously paranoid so dont ever go over the limits through there. You i think stand a good chance of getting a ticket and to the best of my knowledge they are perfectly legal as they no longer have to be visible to the best of my knowledge as the rules changed again recently to allow them to be more efficient cash machines.

For what it is worth I understand these cameras are type approved but should only activate when the variable limit kicks in or the national speed limit shows. The M42 ones in the Midlands however had not been approved up to a year ago hence a camera van often positioned on an overhead bridge but this may have changed recently. However there is indeed a rogue camera on the anticlockwise section of the M25 somewhere by M3/M4 towards Gatwick which I first saw flash about a year and a half ago.

I also understood that the cameras on the M25 were only suppossed to be active when a temporay limit was illuminated on the gantry.

Certainly one night I was travelling at about 1.1 leptons and was flashed, but heard nothing.

So the 14 day rule would be to your advantage in that case wink

Don't think 14 dy rule would be valid in this case due to postal problems.

I wouldn't worry though, I never speed on the M25(usually too busy whenever I'm onn it!), but am almost certain that the cameras are only active when a reduced speed limit is shown.

they are set to 96mph when not active?? i know someone who has done 165 approaching the slip road for the m4 on the m25 and didnt get flashed in the early hours of the morning. I too heard they are only active when there is a reduced speed limit and the sign is illuminated.

Yikes. We ran down to Gatwick in the early hours a week or so ago on that very route, and may have been going quickly. The driver was of course concentrating on the road rather than the speedo so I couldn't put a number on how quick. Additionally, we didn't see any flashes, and we definitely made no formal record of who was driving.

Conflicting stories here.

they are\aren't type approved
they're set to 96mph when variable limit isn't active\they're not on when variable limit isn't active
they may\may not have digital cameras in them

Anyone know anything for sure about these cameras? For what it's worth I've never had flash or a ticket despite sometimes straying over the speed limit, for only a very brief moment until I corrected my speed of course...

The car I was travelling in was doing about 105mph acw near heathrow/M4 once at about 0100. Nothing received by registered keeper.

That's all I have to add!
