Thought, id post up here since maybe someone has a hobby of snaping birds. This bird has been hanging around our garden and a neighbours for the last few days, so my neighbour and father decided to hang on to it and try to get onto its owner since its tagged and belled.

Anyone know what it is? sparrow hawk?! Peregrine perhaps?

Im in North Co. Kildare in Ireland.

Not a peregrine - they are white/grey with yellow beaks. Looks like a sparrow hawk to me.

Cheers steve. We were guessing against sparrowhawk purely because it has a bell attached. Didnt think people would tend to keep sparrowhawks. But then again I dont know that much about birds. Was guessing Peregrine after a quick google search but now that i look longer at the results, the colours are different like you say.

Its a lovely looking bird anyway imo.

Has it got any discernable ring numbers? That'll be the first route to identification

Female Kestrel I think.

I agree with Graham I think it is a female Kestrel. Here's one of mine for comparison (male), IIRC females do not have the grey head. Also Kestrels are popular birds of prey to keep. How big is it? Kestrels are relatively small birds.

I'd say shes about 30cm maybe in height. She doesnt have a ring, but she has a bell and a leather strap so im in no doubt she belongs to a falconer. Local vet is coming by to check her over later and hpefully will have some contact numbers for us to try locate the owner.

Heres another picture that might help with definite identification. She really is a beauty though.

Sounds about the right size for a female Kestrel.

Brid link is quite handy for reference

Going to stick my neck out and have a guess at a female Barbary Falcon. Pretty sure it's not a Kestrel.

Looks spot on, so much for the Kestrel theory frown

I'm not sure it is a Kestrel. Kestrels are not really favoured by Falconers as they are too small and delicate, a more common/popular choice is the Lanner Falcon or the Luggar. I would say this could be a Lanner, definitely female either way.
The front plummage looks too dark for a Kestrel and given the size I would say it is a bigger falcon than the Kestrel...but happy to be proved wrong!!!

or

In the circles of Falconry, Lanners are sometimes crossed with peregrine incidentally.

OK not sure I am convinced it is a Lanner now as the stripes under the eyes looks too thick, might go with the female peregrine or hybrid theory though.

Keep us posted!!!

Thanks lads. It looks very like that Barbary doesnt it?!

Rang the Falconry Shool of Ireland today and they will get back to us tomorrow. Vet didnt appear today but shes being well fed. Happily taking our chicken and liver.

Looks like shes our for a while. Shes quite receptive to a goved hand. She'll be well looked after until the owner is found. Could be one of the local small airports/strips or even the Stud farms.

Will keep yous all posted. Thanks for looking and replying.

(apologies if this is really obvious but) presume you have called the local police to see if anyone has reported her missing?

Incase you weren't aware, it isn't uncommon for landfills to keep Falcons on site to keep the seagulls and other scavengers at bay. Just incase there happens to be one nearby...

Lads thanks for the replies. The young male Peregrine is currently on the road with his owner back home. Owner founds us through our phonecalls to various places. He was lost 3 nights ago. Thanks for all the replies an advice. That falconry forum linked also worked as i got an email tonight with the owners name and number.....after he collected the bird!

Success story!
