Does anybody know the whereabouts of a 1961 Grantura IIA, registration 4177 WD, flogged by my brother to some bloke in Stratford, East London in about 1984. The previous owner had tried to make it into a convertible by sawing the roof off (then hastily fibreglassing it back on when the back half of the shell dropped 4 inches!).

I'm not interested in buying it, I'm just interested in whether or not it survived, it truly was the roughest pile of the old proverbial!!

Sorry, I'm thick, what does 'Date of liability' mean?

Someone did something with the car as it changed colour, it used to be a nice brush painted bright red under my brother's ownership.

That date basically means that it was due to be taxed on that day in 1987 but never was... As it's pre SORN it could still have survived or may be long scrapped.

Another possibility is that it may have been exported.

If you know the V.I.N. you could look on the Grantura Register http://people.zeelandnet.nl/serel/types.htm and see if any one has put it on there.

Hi,
4177 WD was on the front cover of Feb 1986 Sprint, it is Blue. It also is in Dec 1986 Sprint in the Grantura report on page 19-20, owned by a Guy called Chris Wylam, he had just restored it, he lived in the Stratford on Avon area.

"The Brother here" ! Great, it's still exists.

I had so much fun in that car. It was wreck when I got it and slightly less of a wreck when I sold it. It started off a very crazy paved red, then I brush painted in grey primer. That lasted about 18 months and I brush painted it with one coat of yellow. Curiously it turned luminous under sodium street lights which was ghostly fun, so that's how I left it.

As a student I rebuilt it to running again. I completely re-wired it in just one colour, blue/red - it was all I could afford to do. Thank god I at least did it well and it was mostly very reliable. Fixing electrical issues after a few years brain fade got tricky!

It was all geared for acceleration. I could beat Porsches up to 60. It was neck and neck to 50, then they changed gear at 50, but I would start in 2nd and not have to change - great fun. They couldn't believe they were beaten by this 20 year old crock of poo. Cruising at 70 was damned noisy though, all revs and no overdrive.

Somebody had taken the roof off and the back end fell away, so it was lashed back on again. Parked next to a 'normal' Grantura, mine had a far more aerodynamic windscreen angle - doors didn't fit too well though. In fact the window mechanism was to open the door, lift out the whole window frame and put that on the back shelf - all or nothing ventilation.

The interior was a lovely array of carpet samples all in different colours and patterns - it was unusual!

Despite all that, it went through MOTs without a hitch, I generally kept it very good mechanically. For 18 months I was commuting 1,000 miles a month in it, plus all the rest. Not bad for a 20 year old car with no heater.

Happy memories!
