Report in the DT couple of days ago Road Charging UK is up the spout and to be shelved.....so much for despots 10 year Transport plan?
Actually some of the points they make is sense. Want to to see the Terracotta Army Exhibition in Landone. Went to check out cost of day trip by rail - anywhere between 75 and 2000 notes. Day air shuttle from local airport - 250 notes. All to sit crowded like a sardine. No thanks.
When I were a lad you could go anywhere relatively cheaply by train or bus and a frequent service. Not now.

No problem at all with the implementation of a cheap, reliable and efficient public transport network. Only problem I have is being beaten with a stick by the authorities for having the cheek to use my car because they have not provided it. Actually some of the points they make is sense. Quite. And the train companies are still operating like airlines. The further out you book then the less it costs. Trains should be like buses. They should be cheap and you should be able to use them as and when, not having to book 2 months in advance to get the right price. It's not possible usually is it? I can drive my M3 from London to North Yorkshire and back on £60ish worth of petrol. That's about 1/4 of the cost of my wife and I going by train and booking last minute.Piece of advice for train bookings though....
Split the fare.
Example: Travelling London - Leeds. Instead of booking the whole journey, buy a ticket from London to Peterborough and then Peterborough to Leeds. Whilst you are staying on the same train the cost is a shitload cheaper. I usually get first class fares for less than cattle using this method. You can split the fare down as many times as you like. Bit of a fcuked up system but that's the way to get your train fares cheap.
The trouble in this country is pillocks like Ken Livingstone see cars and public transport as two completely seperate, rival things. He supports public transport therefore he is anti car.
Why not build big, free, secure car parks at stations outside central London so that people can drive so far and get the train through the busy bit? Or a car train into and out of central London?
The fact is that people need to drive - they need to carry stuff, and they need to go when they are ready, not when the train says. And a lot of people enjoy driving, even if it means being stuck in traffic it's still preferable to being on a bus.

Train fares are a joke. As well as breaking the journey as proposed up there ^ you also need to look at doing the journey as 2 singles rather than a return. When I were a lad you could go anywhere relatively cheaply by train or bus and a frequent service. Not now.

I went to a funeral in Daveon back in July and it was £38 for a first class sinlge there. £50 fr the same fare back. A return standard class ticket was £250! All very odd!
and would you want to park your car at a station, costing upwards from £12 per day - with a huge risk of it being vandalised, to get in a 1930s train full of stains on the seats (if you find a seat that is) costing more for a 20 mile journal then what it costs in Europe to go from Norway to the South of Spain (slight exageration ...).
To take my family to London from Gatwick (nearest train), costs £80 in train tickets + £20 in two taxi's to get to the station (no public transport to Gatwick) whilst driving on a sunday costs me about £5 in fuel and free parking in central London. Why would I ever consider the train for that ...
