I've noticed several things since owning the Chim:

Dads will not obviously acknowledge (even though some want to)the car - sideways looks etc

Small boys nudge there dads and say, "TVR" It makes me wonder where these lads get there knowledge from? I think their dads.

I've had lads aged about 10 - 12 stand on the pavement as I drive by and give me the thumbs up. Not unlike 30 years ago when I stood and gawped in awe as a TVR went by. Nobody then told me what a TVR was I just knew it was something "different". Looks as if somethings never change smile

I picked up my Chim on Saturday and naturally set about cleaning and fidling with it out side the house.

3 boys (about 12 years old) came past and actually said those imortal words 'cor cool car mister' (may have been mate not mister)

Its a TVR isnt it? (they approached from the back)
Yes
Is it brand new ?
No they dont make them any more, but I have just bought it.
How fast is it?
I dont know yet, but probably over 150
Do you know what TVR stands for?
Yes, do you?
No.
I then explaind about Trevor etc.
They had a good look around it and went merilly on their way chatting about cars

I did contemplate saying something like well, work hard at school and eat all your greens and you too can... etc etc ( or I could have told the truth and said that maybe one day your Dad will die and leave you some money as well)

I wonder if by the time these lads are in a postion to buy themselves a nice car, any one will be allowed to have one ?

I had this happen too a few months ago when at some traffic lights and a couple of boys said the same. Made me smile - That was me 15 years ago biggrin

Also, i sometimes find it difficult to work out who loves the noise and so is staring at the car and who thinks it is too loud and a nusance.... Either way i give it a little rev and they either look happy or angry, then i know... biggrin

I know what you mean, as i had quite a few kids ask a bit about the car or said nice car mate, whilst i am driving by, in fact i have had several adults say similar things.

But this happened the other day.

But it does depend where you live, as the other day i was driving through a Scensoredthole called the flower roads in Southampton when some little oikkk shouted "Wacensoredr at me for no reason.

I nearly stopped, turned round and went after the little sack of crap, to teach him some manners and respect for his elders.

Now fair enough if you dont find the TVR shapes original compared to all the other boring samey looking cars that are on the roads these days but there was no need to call me a Wacensoredr.

Now if i had been driving like an arse, (but I wasn't) or perhaps driving a BMW 3 series, (but i wasn't doing that ever)then i could perhaps understand the little shites reasoning.

I went past a group of young (late teens) girls shortly after getting my car and one of them shouted out "that's the same car as my dad's got!".

Being in my late twenties at the time, that was NOT the reaction I was hoping for smile

Nice Car Mate is often shouted out when driving around by male kids. Sadly, when there are adult males I often hear "Wankaaaahhh".. Strange how it goes.

Sad thing is the little oik (I prefer scrote) probably can't spell w***er and if you had caught up with him would have denied it, "Wah? Dunno wot u talkin 'bout mr" Always amused when such types shout from the safety of distance but confronted and asked to repeat it face to face inevitably loose their bottle. Game over as far as I'm concerned.

PS I used to have a 3er but never called that ...... loads of other names but never that smile

Twice recently received compliments from adults - in both cases older chaps. In services off the A27 outside Chichester a chap was hanging around with his wife for no good reason that I could see when eventually he walked over (I was waiting for my wife in the loos) and asked "Do you mind if I take a look around? It a lovely car!" Then in Newbury I pulled up in a small car park and as I walked away from the car a chap parked a few cars down said how good it sounded and asked if it was a V8.

Maybe its the younger adults who resent us owners...

I was sitting in a traffic jam and I suddenly heard somebody calling, ignoring it the first as I wasn't expecting anybody to start talking to me when I heard the call again and I turned to the car sitting next to me. An old boy was sitting in his Jag with his mate next to him with his missus in the back.

'Excuse me......Can you rev it up ??'

Me: Er, yes !!

'Best sound it the world !!' he exclaimed as his mate gave me the thumbs up !! (even the old girl in the back had a big grin on her face.)

Had the odd occassion where people have been looking at the car, often in a pub car park as I have walked up to it and opened the door. Normally they look a little bemused. - Maybe I still have my youthful looks..

Also, had ego badly bruised with the classic girls comment of 'my Dad's got/had one of those' - Never the comment I thought I'd hear when I was looking to buy one. frown

Driving with the roof down one evening I pulled up at some traffic lights next to another car, I pulled away not giving it too much as there was another set about 200 yds up the road.

Same car pulls along side and the guy calls out " Must be my lucky night"
I ask why and he says "I get the chance to hear that noise again as you pull away, it's the best noise in the world" accompanied by a huge grin biggrin

That time I gave him a bit of a blast as I pulled away, he flashed his lights with a thumbs up and then turned off.

Makes you feel really proud, and embarrassed at the same time.

I've often wondered when the point is that 'nice car, mister' becomes 'wr'. I wonder if it's at all to do with people getting to driving age, realising that the Saxo just isn't all that, and understanding what driving can really be like. If you've a predeliction towards wearing tops with hoods, and ain't too smart, this could lead to resentment, not simple envy.

Thing is, most folk have little idea of how little it can cost to have one of these beasts. I was a 'nice car, mister' kid, and can still remember the first time i saw a TVR. Perhaps the comment about the guy mistaking the TVR for a Porsche goes some way to explaining the abuse we sometimes recieve.....

I got amazing responses driving a friend's Atom. The waves and smiles from cute girls were great, but the looking and pointing from 6 year old boys was just as good, because I know that thirtytoomany years ago I was that six year old.

Can I just say that the lack of any lude responses show that the Chim forum still maintains a certain dignity. If this post title had appeared on the Pie and Piston I think a large number of posts of the cruder variety would have been posted.

Bravo chaps.

I'm not alone in that on occasion I get to feel proud and embarrased at the same time smile

The other evening on returning to the car which was parked in a car parking area at the petrol station I saw three blokes aged early twenties standing near the front of the car. From their behaviour they had obviously been talking about the Chim but as I approached they all went quiet. As I got in the car we exchanged, "Alrights?" One of them nudged his mate and they all started smiling. I then said, "Better cover your ears then" and started up. Their smiles got even bigger and as I pulled away (the embarrasing part) I give it more revs than really necessary which was followed by a loud, "Yeeeees" from one of them smile

I still get amused at the reactions of some people when I start up the Chim - sudden turn around to look at what has made the noise and a "What the ....." expression!
