At long last my licence has finally been returned to me after me and my Chimaera got caught speeding in North Wales. I am a little confused as I have received 3 points and an SP60 which I understand represents an undefined speeding offence. The incident in question took place on an empty, straight piece of dual carriageway (I was apparently doing 89 mph), so, how come it's undefined and is this likely to be injurous to my insurance which is shortly to come up for renewal? Can anyone shed any light?

Were you on the A55 by any chance?
I head to Anglesey every so often to see my folks. Coming from the South the A55 used to be a faster alternative route to the A5.
I've given up on it now as the speed advantage is no longer there...so why not enjoy the twisties of the A5..etc.
North Wales. It just not as nice to go to as it once was. Shame. And the same is true of Scotland's roads I've found. The ones without European money are full of pot-holes that burst tyres and the ones with have speed cameras on them. It'll be bad for tourism eventually I'm sure....

I got an SP60 with a few points recently, wasn't sure what it meant but wondered if it was exceeding the 60 limit.
Perhaps it just means 'official donor to the local scamera scheme'
Edited to add; have had 1 (of 3) insurance renewals, for Motorbike policy and IIRC they wanted about £40 - £50 extra, however I shopped around and saved nearly £200, but got 2 car renewals due at end of year so have to wait and see.

Don, yes I think it was - though frankly it was a while ago and I now can't remember, but I was driving from an Anglesey track day. My little brush with the law has been one long *!!!* up - it's taken over two months to sort it out, but then I'm not going to wind myself up again on this one...
Thanks everyone for your replies.

Sounds like the new extension of the A55 from the mainlaind all the way to Holyhead (J3 for Ty Croes IIRC).
I almost got caught there a week after it opened. I was 'making progress' on this nice new road and as I was about to reach a crest on the road before a long downhill section, I was slowed by a van towing a Caterham which was overtaking a caravanner. I waved to the Caterham guy as I passed and was about to floor it when I noticed a police car about 1 mile away in the layby (just before a bridge). I can only imagine what speed I would have been doing if there hadn't been that little hold-up.
Safety camera my arse - as there was obviously no accident history to support the BIB in the layby with a laser!

Speed limit endorsement codes:-
Code
SP10 = Exceeding goods vehicle speed limit
SP20 = Exceeding speed limit for type of vehicle (excluding goods or passenger vehicles)
SP30 = Exceeding statutory speed limit on public road
SP40 = Exceeding passenger vehicle speed limit
SP50 = Exceeding motorway speed limit
SP60 = Undefined speed limit offence.
The reason you have been given the code SP60 is that your offence does not fit into any of the others above other than SP60.

No, I think the reason is that the paperwork was so badly completed and also virtually illegible that they couldn't actually work out what I'd done! I believe it should have been a standard SP30, though, providing it doesn't have an extra negative effect on my insurance, I'm not terribly worried either way.

No. I think you are wrong. SP30 is required to be used on offences that you exceed where the limit is posted on a tin plate with a red ring around it.
SP60 is by definition a road which is subject to the National speed limit rather than a specific posted reduced statutory limit (even though the National speed limit is a statutory limit itself because it is written into statute).
Complex I know but this is what I understand to be the case.
I got a SP60 for the same offence (although going a bit quicker!) I put it down to being in a national speed limit area. I was on a dual carriageway with solid central reservation (A50). I don't think the specific code makes much of a difference for insurance purposes, just the type of fine you got.
As I now have an sp50 as well, I was going to have a go at getting the full set, but looking at those codes it may be a bit tricky!!

I was done for speeding on a 3 lane stretch of carriageway that became a motorway a few miles further on. It would have been classed as dualcarriageway, so no speed limits posted on signs, I was stopped and given the verbal nip and later banned for 2 months. When I got my license back it had SP30 on it. That seems to confuse insurers when I say I was banned but only have an SP30
