Yes, there was the 'Weasel' (Westfield Diesel) a few years ago. It used a tuned Ford turbodiesel giving about 120bhp, IIRC, and was covered by several magazines at the time. 0-60 and 0-100 times were good, but not outstanding, but everyone commented on the excellent in-gear mid-range acceleration.
If you can work out an inline installation (gearbox and intercooler plumbing), I'd have thought that the 160bhp VAG turbodiesel would give pretty impressive performance.
They still sound horrible, though.

I can't see a Type 9 lasting long behind a modern turbo diesel however!http://www.tigersportscars.nl/Bellhousings.htm

Yep, and guess whose about to 'go there and do that' - I'm planning on using the donor's Type 9 behind a 20V 4AGE in my Striker - might last half an hour or so. BGH reckon on 140hp max through a standard type 9, but can't quite stretch to one of their HD long 1st boxes yet. I'll get it thru SVA then worry about it.
