Hey, I bought one of the V10 5.0 TDI Phaetons from a PH-er not too long ago and so far it has been utterly flawless. However, for some bizarre reason I started the car up this morning and the in-dash screen that shows MPG, gear etc... is just showing garbage. It basically looks like coloured static.

Has anyone got any suggestions as how to diagnose the fault because the dealer is already rubbing his hands in glee and talking about how incredibly expensive replacing the whole dash unit is. Which is of course the only fix in his opinion.

So, is there any way of forcing a hard reset on the system, or anything I can at least have a look at to try and work out what's wrong? It seem crazy it just stopped working over the course of about 5-seconds, and only when the engine was stop/started.

Thanks!

I don't think you understand how long it would take me to set everything back up the same as it is now if I did that! After 6 months of ownership I'm still finding new bloody options in this thing.

In any case, I've done a bit of digging and this is a known problem the dealer should be well aware of. For future reference in case anyone else has the same issue: switch ignition to off, pull fuses 23 and 27 from the front fusebox, wait 30 seconds, re-insert, problem solved.

New bloody dash unit indeed. mad

Go back to the dealer - with a print out of details of the known fix. Ask for a quote to fix the problem. Get him to print it out for you. Give him the copy of the fix, and send a copy of both to VW explaining how your dealer is a robbing twunt.
