I seem to recall somewhere that inertia selling is illegal i.e adding something to an item you are buying without asking and then charging you for it (to increase their sales figures). Relies on your inertia/ not noticing and paying up anyway.

I keep having "Legal Expenses" cover added to my renewal notice by my broker. I have this cover elsewhere - I don't need it twice, every year without fail I have to ring them up and tell 'em I don't want it resulting in a recalculation, new documents, a delay etc.

Having now told them about 6 years on the trot if someone can tell me the legal position I am going to challenge them, maybe even make an official complaint and if it is illegal even threaten them with the FSA.

Any legal types know the score?

My accountant, my professional body and my liability insurance company add a charitable donation to the invoice ( about £3) which I have to cross out if I don't want to make the donation.

I moved my car insurance for the Griff because they added extra insurance I didn't want (breakdown cover IIRC, when I was with the AA already). I spoke to the MD who said it coudln't be removed, and on pressing, he had to agree it was simply there to make him more profit.

Wow, so they rely on you feeling guilty and crossing it out! I'm not one for these enforced donation affairs, i'd be changing suppliers if they did that to me.
