I have been asked if I will crew for a friend of mine on his Hunter 707 whilst racing.

I have only ever driven power boats (mostly RIBs) so am new to sailing as such.

Does anyone have any tips they can share?

Cheers all.

Keep your head down, but keep your eye's open and watch and learn, you will probably be told to pull the odd rope at first and be rail fodder , Note:- don't get in the way of the traveller neither as they tend to come in cleat-ed . Also one hand for the boat at first , they are quite tippy so make sure you get across sharpish in the tacks or you will be swallowing water !.
We have one hear at the school , i sail it single-handed quite a lot , ( no kite though !!)

Watch your head on the boom.
Wear the best waterproofs and gloves you can.
Don't take any crew abuse personally.

hehe

The best piece of advice I can offer is always remember that every piece of string has something attached to the end of it - don't just pull or grind something indiscriminately without looking at what's going on at the other end!!

On that sized boat, don't volunteer for foredeck if you're fat.
You'll get wet feet.
Before you go on the water, make sure the skipper has bought pies, if not make sure you bring your own, and spare socks (see above).

Thanks for the tips everyone, much appreciated.

We got her in the water from storage on Thursday, got the mast up and the outboard installed on Friday, have taken the weekend out and all being well should get the boom up and her rigged this week.

I'm really looking forward to it.

A quick update, we set the rigging up today, set the tensions on the shrouds and got the prebend on the mast sorted. Friday we are going to sort out the pesky outboard which isn't quite fitting right yet and needs some piggling.

My skipper is on about doing the Nationals next year, sounds like good fun. I have told him to count me in for that.
