Does air dried 2K paint harden to the same degree as oven baked? I'm also wondering if time is also a factor with air dried. I ask this as I'm not satisfied with the finish after rubbing down air dried after a few weeks (winter conditions). Used 800 then 1500 W&D but not been able to remove all the swirl/scratch marks with rubbing compound. Advice sought

Properly mixed and applied, it's likely a decent 2k paint would fully cure in that timescale - but the only way to be sure is to check the tech data sheets.

Not all 1500 grits are the same - they can vary by manufacturer. You may have used a coarser one, which your rubbing compound isn't up to.

For the absolute best finish, we follow 1500 or 2000 grit with 3M's Trizact finishing pads, which are extremely fine indeed, and super regular in their cut. A decent cutting compound (or the dedicated Trizact compound) after those, carefully used on a rotary mop, should leave you the perfect gloss.

Hi, if the paint has yet to cure properly (are you sure this is the case?) it can only be due to 3 factors - incorrect mixing ratio when painted, out of date hardener - it has a shelf life - or noncompatible materials. Did you purchase the materials within a few months of doing the job?
2 pack paint is chemically hardened - although those of us that use a spraybooth benefit from speedier drying times there is no reason at all (other than those stated) why it should not have fully dried in a few days.
As above with the chip specialist - I always wet block from 800, through 1000, 1200 & finish with 1500 dry with an interface pad on a da.
It could be that you have not got rid of the 800 marks by using 1500, if you are doing it all by hand (i.e not using a da) then you are much better off finishing with 2000. What grade compound & polishing head are you using & do you have a high torque polisher?
If I can be of any help please contact me through my website.
Best wishes, Al.
