After topping up old faithful (L plate Nissan Almera) with some oil and yesterday I noticed after going quickly (for an Almera) round a tight right hand corner, about 20 seconds after the corner plumes of white / blue smoke billows out of the back. Normally there isn't a whiff of any smoke out of the car, could this be a case of putting too much oil in?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Yes I believe it could be too much oil. I think the thing to do would be to leave it on the flat for 1/2 an hour, then check the level with the dipstick to see if there's too much in or not.

Did you just bung a random load of oil into the engine or did you check the dipstick before and after? Too much oil could certainly cause this problem.

Checked the dipstick first (was almost empty!) then put in some after checking.
