I'm looking at purchasing a used RS4 or RS6 Avant...budget is no more than £25k, so obviously I'm talking about the old model here. Preference is the RS6.

What are real world running costs (mpg, servicing) like, especially as the mileage heads north of 100k?

Anyone any views?

Is the RS worth the premium over the S?

B6 S4 V8 is the one to go for, for £25000 you'll get a good one 04/54/05 reg. No turbos and no cambelts to go wrong. Between 17 and 22mpg. The only RS4 you'll get for that money, is an old B5 which will have been to the moon and back been modified and difficult to get a warranty on.

Ring times, if you're interested.

OK, my take.....(on RS4's only)

Check out RS246.com as previously advised....lots of info there, but a quick rundown.

Prices vary wildly between 18K for a 100K miler upto 28K for a 40K miler, (all asking prices so obviously room for negotiation).
Cambelts done every 40K miles which is the big service. Discs and pads are expensive to replace approx £1K for OEM all-round, and clutches are also a £1K when they need replaced, which isnt often.

Try and find cars which havent had the longlife serving, or have had additional oilchanges in between the scheduled services.

There are lots of examples with varying states of tune. Remap to 420ish (380 std) + milltek cat-back exhaust is the most common upgrade, and really changes the driveability of the car. Another mod is the RS6 front brakes as the std ones aint the best if your really hard on them, or want to do some track work.

I see you live in Oxfordshire, therefore you just happen to have the widely regarded best S4\RS4 tuning and maintenance company in MRC tuning nearby. If you get one, take it to them for a 'health check'.

Lots of examples on PH. and for sale on RS246.com

i had a 2003 rs6 real world for me was average 12mpg + £950 front discs and pads tyres worn ok for weight and speed and pads were 1/2 worn in about 5k miles

they are a pukka bargain but major factor is running costs

I'd just say don't buy an RS6 if you're on a budget. It costs £75 to fill up and if you drive it hard you'll get 12mpg. Saying that it is simplly an exhilarating car.

I've been drawn to an RS6 recently. Currently have a 4.5 TVR Cerbera and a Range Rover (+ wife and 2 young kids) i Reckon I've put 1000 miles on the Cerbera this year as come the weekend I am out with the family. the RS6 seems like a perfect replacement (or perhaps an M5)

Have to disagree with the B5 RS4 comment. These are extremely exclusive and you can pick them up un-modified for around 20k mark, with fairly good mileage.Give it 3 yrs or so and thats what ill be trading my S4 B5 in for.And you will always get good money on these when selling because they are so exclusive and very tuneable.

RS6 also excellent,my partner is also looking at either the RS6 or B5 RS4 Avant.Think he may well go for an RS6 Avant and ill have the RS4 B5 in a couple of years lick

I sold my Cerbera in the summer and I can honestly say that the acceleration from the RS6 is as good as the Cerbs. The torque from the RS6 is fantastic. Plus I can now scare the whole family and the dog!

The only downside is the Cerb won hands down when it came to the noise produced from the exhaust. Although a Miltek system should help come a close second.

Gazm, go for the RS6! you won't regret it.

Poor Dog haha.

I have 2 dogs, and 1 just barks at random things when were in the car which can get very annoying.I remember saying to my partner "wait till we take the dog out in the RS6, foot to the floor and Dogs face up the back of the window haha.Wonder if she will stop barking then biggrin
