The g/f still has a paper only license. Ought she to have got a photo ID card by now, or is she OK just with the (shattered) bit of paper?

They'll want you to fork out for an 'upgrade' if you change address and that'll cost you handsomly. I've still got my paper licence, I quite like itsmile

Best wishes all,

I'll be keeping my old paper one for as long as it stays paper. biggrin
I've heard horror stories of people going for the new licence and finding they are missing classes they had, eg. full bike licence. I haven't even sent mine back to get the SP30 off it.

I think you photocopy it before sending it off but I hear what you're saying. Or you lose it and ask for a replacement, then find it again if you need to smile

Mine was last renewed when we moved house about nine years ago. We're not thinking of moving again; this place is very old (dates back to 1540) and weird - and it suits us admirably. Very much in keeping! rofl

Best wishes all,
Dave.

It's FREE if you change your name or address.

I think you have to pay if going to a photocard because they want your passport or birth certificate etc as proof that you're a fine english person. Plus you have to obtain the photo's. They didn't question it when you took out the provisional all those years ago so what's changed? Am I who I was or have I changed? Anyway, would you put that personal stuff in the mail or use a courier.

You can do it through the post office rather than through the post box so no big deal and only costs you the photos once - only need to upgrade if you have significantly changed! Just ring them to chase through and they put you to the top of the list. In my experience a great service and a pretty useful form of id too!

My boss tried to feed mine through his photocopier. It is pretty old and now it's in 3 pieces (ripped along the folds), held together with sellotape.
Should/must I get it replaced? Will I have to pay? How do I go about it?

Maybe so but I wouldn't let the p/o have my birth certificate or mugshot for the database. They didn't need it before so I resent the goal posts moving. I think it's an EU requirement.

Out of interest, how's it useful to you as a form of i/d? I've never been asked for i/d?

Keeping my old paper one too! Just had a look now record since November 1995 is 2 fixed penalties and a 21 day ban. Something to show the grand children that.

Sorry to bump this but I was hoping someone might have some definitive answers.

Definitive answers here:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensi...

In brief, though, if changing address it's "free" (other than the cost of photos / posting etc). If just changing to a photocard for the hell of it, there's a £10 charge.

I had to change mine, but as I am an EU citizen, they would not accept my passport as it is not UK. Needed an original birth certificate (only valid for 2 weeks in NL), so had to fly over to get it.

Only advantage is that they made a mistake in the UK - they gave me a license for everything, including 3.5 tons, bike etc which I never had before smile

Thanks for the link, Peter. Fairly straightforward, if a bit tedious.
£22 taken. I now await a less fragile licence.
