iPhone with BMW bluetooth does it work?

Hi folks,
I'm getting a 330d touring next month (one of the new Eff dynamics engines) and ive opted for pro nav with bluetooth + telematics, one of my mates has a 530d with pro nav and tells me his Nokia N80 wont connect / work with the car. His dealer has told him that no Nokias running N-series Symbian os will work with the BMW system so my N95 wont work with it either! i'm assuming thats true?
So a new phone is on the cards so naturally i thought ace a new iPhone should suffice (a good opportunity for an excuse to get one and get round the wifes techno purchase restrictions). Now ive had a look on the BMW america site and whilst a few people seem to have had problems with early phones it seems that most are now working ok, does anyone on here have one and does sim access profile work with it?
Also does anyone have any nice new phones with which the sim access profile works?

bmw.co.uk/bluetooth will give you the list of phones and how compatable they are.
I have a Nokia E50 and apart from being the worst phone ever made it's not compatable with my bluetooth system, it will work hands free but you have to use the phone to dial the number.
I'm pretty sure a collegue has an N95 that works, so you may just need a software upgrade if you are buying used.

It's going to depend on several things as to BT conection to the BMW ULF,
1: what version of ULF do you have.
2: what type of phone you are trying to connect.
3: what version the firmware on the phone is.
Most if not all versions of ULF will support BT 1.0, I have a Gen 3 ULF and can connect the nokia 6230, 6230i and a v500, all connect and will make and receive calls, but the 2 nokia's will also transfer the address book and the SMS mesages. The 6230 (non i) required a firmware update -> 5.50.
N series phone should work with the ULF, but make sure the phone has the latest firmware, as early versions were rushed out and can be buggy.
Even if the BT stack on the phone supports BT 2.0 and A2DP, it should still be BT 1.0 backwards compatible.
Also the later the ULF, the better chance you have of the a stable BT connection.

my iphone works well - version 1.0.2 seemed to have a problem with "+" chars for international dialing (use "00" instead). This has apparently been fixed with 1.1.1 firmware but not tried it yet.
btw, if any of you use windows smartphone/wm5/wm6 - download www.jetwaremobile.com and get great compatibility!

Spants, thanks for your reply could you tell me does the address book work and sms messages transfer over as it does with the fully compatible phones?
by the way 1.0.2 must be jail broken then!- you wouldnt be running 3rd party apps would you

mine cost £215 when I was in the usa. 1.0.2 (old) and 1.1.1 (new) can both be unlocked fairly easily (www.hackint0sh.org). I couldnt get sms preview to work on any phone (I've tried many makes) but the address book transfers without trying.
Overall, the iphone is the best phone that I have used - even with its quirks!

I would say two thirds of phone complaints are down to incompatible phones being used.
What a lot of people do is get a second phone that is compatible with a dual sim card and switch over phones in the car.

Car Phone Warehouse are swines and won't take it back (they have different returns policy in their small print for these phones rather than all the others. Am hoping to be able to take the SIM card out and put it back in my TyTN / SPV m3100 which works perfectly with the Bluetooth, and sell the phone on ebay). So don't buy an iPhone and certainly not with Car Phone Warehouse if you have a BMW and are in the UK.

Well having got my 330d m touring 08 year model (e91-m57t)i can say that the iphone does indeed work very well with it, the phone book is transfered over automatically (good job ive 500 numbers) and it works very well with system as a whole, without doubt the best integrated phone system ive used.
