Its no secret that the VAG PD diesels are being phased out, starting with the Tiguan next year. While particulate emissions is the overriding driver for this, I'm sure it will be welcomed in refinement terms as well. Personally I was never that convinced by PD; compared to my old 90hp pre PD engine the 100hp PD that superceded it, and each increasingly more powerful variant that followed, seemed rougher, less flexible, and noisier. The first timne I drove a 130hp TDi I was amazed by how abruptly the power dropped off and how limited the rev range was.

Anyway, to the point. I'm actually in the market for a new car at the moment, and looking at various diesels. 'Er indoors is rather keen on me getting a Golf - "You had one before and you liked it, and they hold there value really well". Well yes I did, but for the reasons stated I'm not convinced I would again; but(perhaps more importantly) WILL they hold their value?

I think the new engines next year will make the existing PD engined cars about as attractive as a leper with a hard on. Who is going to want an agricultural sounding and infexible PD engined car when the new gen "Clean Diesel" engined car is available?

Well the new engines are going to be in the £18-20k ball park so anyone looking at a Mk4 Golf GT TDI 115/130/150 isnt in the situation to be able to afford those anyway.

Also there is nothing wrong with the PD engines they are far more economical than the common rail equivalents + so far their high milage ability seems to be pretty good.

Im in a similar situation - either get a nice new 330D M sport or 123d Sport /120d M sport or the older 204bhp 330D (or even a 330i) or then again why not a cheap £5-7k vRS Fabia or Golf or Leon....

Nice enough cars really solid and all desirable.
