okay to drive??
Discussion
Hi, tale of ongoing hassle, lucky ther car is so beautiful, or it would be in the bin!
I have a new 4.6 V8 Developments engine, just fitted, done 200 miles. It has started making a whining noise when hot, okay when cold. It sounds like a waterpump bearing, but that is new and removing the fan belt does not stop the noise.
Now, the correct answer is call V8 Developments, but having had the car off the road the last 12 weeks I would like to drive it whilst it is not raining, and had planned a trip tomorrow.
Anyone have any ideas? Should I leave it in the garage?
Perhaps I should clarify, noise really prevalent at tickover, quite loud, but not at higher revs (can't hear it then??).

Try turning the alternator and other ancillaries by hand (with the belt off, obviously) and see whether any of them feel rough or have any play in the bearings. Also while you're there check for small stones caught in the fan belt, this is more likely to produce a tap rather than a whirring noise but you never know.
I'm probably wrong - but it's not just air passing through the bleed screw on the throttle body?
If this is still set to 4.0 / 4.3 setting it might be a little too tight for the 4.6. Would only occur when hot as the stepper is wide(r) open at cold idle.
Easy to check - just wind it out a little.

My guess too - mine leaks a little all the time unless screwed right down, which obviously then makes the car run as rough as arseholes. If it is that, it's certainly driveable and not a major worry. If this is still set to 4.0 / 4.3 setting it might be a little too tight for the 4.6. I've got exactly the same noise but i would describe it as a whirring and whining noise. It comes and goes a little but only when hot and it does sound exactly like a dodgy bearing. I've tried the same things to narrow it down like removing the belt (serp) i also suspected the clutch release bearing but it isn't in contact with the clutch fingers at rest, (i checked through the inspection hatch)and the sound doesn't change when the clutch is depressed. I have also adjusted the air bleed, no change.
I have also tried to trace the noise using a length of small diameter pipe, with one end in my ear like a stethoscope but i just can't find where it's coming from. I have done about 5000 miles with this noise present and it hasn't really changed. I was hoping it would either go away or get worse so that it would identify itself.
I'm pulling the engine out soon for some further mods, i will be inspecting cam bearings, oil pump bearings and anything else i can think of just to be on the safe side.
Would be nice to get to the bottom of this one for peace of mind so keep the suggestions coming in.

Does the brake fluid in coolant trick apply to using 5.1 fluid because thats all I've got.
I've got a bit of a whine from somewhere, nothing I'm too worried about but if I can help with a bit of routine stuff like this I might as well give it a go.
I take it you just stick a teaspoonfull in the swirl tank?
