F40 6, Lp640 3.....Looks like the Ferrari is running away with this one!
After having driven the 640, I came away feeling a little flat (I am a diehard Lambo fan btw). It is frighteningly fast, but was just so easy to just jump into and drive, it just seemed to lose a bit of its magic. The F40 on the otherhand, I get nervous just looking at. I imagine that it is a nightmare to drive (I never have) and to look after, but I desperately want one. My only concern is now that it is > 15yrs old I just wont be able to drive it in the way I could the 640. Plus I am having a bit of a hard time finding the right one. Though I would let the pistonheads jury decide....

One requires imense skill to drive fast, the other does not.
One depreciates, one apreciates.
If you are serious about narrowing your choice donwn to the two then the only logical choice is the F40.
You'll find a good one for no less than £220k these days.
Lots of people will tell you that you can buy one for a lot less.
Crap I'm afraid, you'll want to make sure that the following has been done:
1) Bellhousing is made from magnesium, it needs inspections every 3 years to check for corrosion.
2) Tanks need replacing every 3-5 years depending on the make of tanks.
3) The tubular chasis can rust, it needs checking.
4) Ensure that the engine has had the compression tested, if low will most likely require new liners etc.
Hope this helps a bit.
Oh, and I drove an LP640 recently absolutely flat out and it was too easy and quiet. Very nice place to be, good for long drives etc.
The F40 is like driving a nuclear missle, it a very different proposition. Weekend car that will always leave you feeling charged after diving it.

Pointless really as it always is with new v old. Probably better to ask what will we think of the LP640 in 15/20 years compared to the cars of then. Will it still be thought of in the high regard the F40 is now?
Nope. The LP640 is a tweeked Murcielago. The F40 is an icon. Lamborghini fanboys get over it
....
Anyway the most iconic supercar for me is the Miura. Hard to drive, always broken, pointless = perfect.
