I'm not sure. The first CV8s are fast heading towards the £10k mark and a lot of cars are being bought by younger drivers (no bad thing in itself). Question is, will these cars remain desirable or go the same way as the mighty Calibra Turbo? In a couple of years will we see them sprayed in dodgy pearlescent paint, sporting neons with some yoof slumped over the steering wheel or will they become collectible classics?

As any car gets cheaper they will quickly appeal to younger drivers, the last astra turbo coupe is a great example, loads of young lads have them now!

Im sure one or two stupidly done up monaro's will crop up on the scenes at some point but probably not many. The whole modification market for doing stupid things seems to be in a decline of recent years so might not be much chance of seeing many.

There's hardly enough of them around to make it worth while for anyone to manufacture any mods for them, IMO. They don't really have much requirement for loud exhaust systems.

I think the running costs will prevent too many of them from descending into the hands of young drivers. I think they'll go like old TVRs and Lotuses, money pits for the devoted.

Very true, one of the companies may get hold of one and do a one off bodykit by grafting someting from a clio V6 or the likes onto one though!

Apparently only 800 Monaros were imported to the UK between 2004 and 2006 so you maybe right, I certainly hope so.

As a young chap myself (23) I guess I fit into this category your speaking of !

I'm on quite a reasonable earner for my age, and a monaro is still quite a serious purchase (18k outlay, and then the ongoing fuel and maintenance costs to keep it perfect) I doubt many younguns can easily get their hands on the cash to get these cars just yet... but yes, in 5-10 years time when the 04 cars hit say, 5k, i'd imagine there will be an increase in younguns driving them... Insurance on monaros is incredibly cheap (23, 4 years NCB and i've been quoted 1200 fc)

does the fact I want to respray mine in Tiger Gold make me a chav? Not going to happen for a few years yet but worrying that I could then be a 40+ year old chav. Would I have to buy a white shell suit, get my nose pierced and wear lots of gold jewellery?

As for that Corsa - admire the paint job but the bodykit is bloody awful, way too much for such a small car.

Im the same age and insurance on a 6l VXR comes out at a rather worrying £900 a year. Admittedly not got one yet mainly as I work in the trade and refuse to pay anywhere near retail prices, going to have to bite the bullet though if want to get one.

No offence but since when did 1200 quid become 'cheap' for insurance?

Its cheap when your probably used to paying around £1500 for upto a 2litre car in the not too distant past of being 18/19years old!

when a new driver on a 1.0 1989 fiesta pays the same I guess....

Maybe I'm just used to paying excessive premiums though ... !?

When I moved over to NI in '02 my Astra Coupe Turbo cost me a staggering 1850 squid to insure with 8 years NCB at 27 y/old, granted the same car would have only set me back approx 500 squid to insure at mums in Glasgow, so you can imagine my thoughts as I sat on the end of the phone 4 years later waiting to hear the response to my quote request on the 'ro...3700 squid was the reply with 12 years NCB and 31 y/old...but for me the minute I first heard wind of the ro's coming to the UK I simply had to get one...I loved watching the Oz V8's when they could be found on TV and the ro was always on my list of cars that I had to have (kinda like your dream list of cars I suppose), so glad I bit the bullet and went for it when I did...

The thing is with modifying cars that so many of the owners on here have upgraded for performance, braking, handling by spending how many k's of hard earned wedge, whereas many younger drivers simply don't have so much cash tucked away under their matress to be able to throw 5-6k at a supercharger, 2.5k at a set of brakes, and instead choose to spend their pennies in a way that they want to, by instead changing the look of the car to make it more "individual", yes some of the cars found at shows and events may have 15-20k spent on them too, but that's taking it to the extreme which isn't truly a fair representation...I personally don't see a problem with it - it's their car after all to do with as they wish (as long as they do so legally and don't run into me)...

I think the low numbers will probably steer the Monaro in a different direction (bit like the Lotus Carlton).

I've had a lot of Calibras and was a moderator on ClubCalibra for years - however, the Monaro has forced me to leave the site. While most members/owners liked the car and myself I got a distinct feeling from some that I wasn't welcome - I think due to the car being worth 30 times more than most Calibras. I even showed it on CC's stand at Billing this year.

Anyway - I hope it doesn't go that way!

Games up then for me as I have bigger wheels, lowered suspension, under body neons & headlight strobes, however if don’t think I qualify to be a ‘chav’ (no council house & not violent) LOL
