Demisting with aricon - Golf vs Audi?

My A6 TDi demists really fast in the morning, 30 seconds and I can drive off. My wife's Golf takes many minutes to clear even the lower part of the screen. It's a 2002, the aircon seems to chill ok in the summer so I don't think it needs a recharge. Annoyingly, it clears passenger side 1st, maybe that's a LHD feature?
Anyone else got a problem? Are they all like that?
