Hmmmm...

Will look at the logs to see if the ads were going slow or the servers, still good to know when the site decides to have a slow down... it must be mourning the achievements of English sporting prowess!

I know PH is a busy site, but it has to be around the slowest and least reliable there is. Who's servers do you use? Haven't they been ugraded recently?

We use our own servers, maintained on Carrenza's network connected to the backbone of the internet. We have invested as much as we can on increasing the IT infrastructure, and if we hadn't done so we would not even be running now. The site is still ever expanding in size and is now 4th Automotive site in the UK, with only Autotrader, EBay Motors and The AA ahead of us... as you can tell it is hard work keeping everything going with that volume and not the same amount of expenditure as our close competitors... so we are still trying as hard as possible!

the last few times i've had speed problems on this site it appears to be the adverts causing it. the page loads as quick as normal down too the ad & then freezes for ages, as soon as the ad appears the rest of the page comes up right away.

yeah it's something to do with the way the page loads and the ads included, can't remember the details though I'm sure pete or someone of similar techy caliber will be along to explain.
Basically, adblocking the images from that server works a treat.

It's a bit of a catch 22 as the more money we make from ads the more we can spend on speeding them up, but I have trialled a new method on a part of the classifieds with the loading of the adverts (that is also being tested on another site) and once that is succesful then we can swap to the ads being loaded after the page in the forums and improve the service.
