Ah, the golden 'is it worth it?' question...
If we knew the engine and gearbox were going to expire soon, we'd take the cover. If the warranty company knew this fact, the cover would be 30k not 900 quid.
If we knew everything would be OK for the warranty period, we'd save our money. If the warranty company knew that everything would be OK, they'd be spending their 900 quid on cocaine and call girls already.
Only you know the answer to 'is it worth it?'
Consider the model - a 996 I presume - not as reliable as some and pricey if major components go... has to be a yes to this one.
Consider the resale - a warrantied car sells better to a private punter.
Consider the age - if it is brand new and serviced every other mile, it is less likely to need major work than an old dog you throw Castrol GTX at every three years.
Consider the peace of mind - if a warranty helps you sleep better, that could be worth 900 quid. Being hypnotised personally for insomnia by Paul McKenna costs about the same.
Consider the cost of sorting out a major problem - I have seen 996 gearboxes for 1800 quid. Not bad these days. If you owned a GT1 then you may not find many spare parts in a breakers at such a reasonable price. Independent servicing costs between 30-50 quid per hour, and could be a cost effective way of getting major work done. If your engine goes it may be a 5k bill to repair it. That's 6 years of warranty, but how many 6 year old cars have their engines rebuilt? Some maybe. Certainly not all.
Consider these questions and the answer will be a bit clearer.
I'd say, if you can afford it - go for it.
If you don't have money to burn, are prepared to take the odd risk and you know a friendly mechanic, I wouldn't bother.

Can I suggest a counter argument re Insurance in general according to the "Oldhatter" theory of life the universe etc.
Insurance is only worthwhile if you can't afford the cost implications of an uninsured loss. This means that the opposite of Domster's advice holds true. You should self insure if you will wince at, but could find the money for a major repair. If this would be catastrophic you probably need the insurance.

That is a fair point.
I had mentioned that kind of scenario in the post earlier on, but in summing up my thought was 'it's easier to stomach a 900 quid warranty bill if you are loaded'.
If you are running the car on a very tight budget (never a good idea with a Porsche or any other high performance car) then it may be worth 'winging it' and saving your money.
As before, so much depends on your own personal circumstances and point of view.
