My Rush nearly finished (just SVA / DVLA left)
Discussion
Hi all.
I was hoping that you guys and girls would be good enough to have a quick look over my Rush before I take it to its SVA next week.
The bits I know about are:
-I'm missing rear reflectors (fitting them on the day)
-Windscreen won't pass (it's coming off and the mirrors will be fitted to the scuttle)
-The small bolts holding the bottom of the nose on will be covered
-I've made but not fitted a steering wheel cover to pass the radiusing problem
Thanks in advance!

Looks good. As said the bonnet catches. Can't see on the photos but does the off side upper front suspension mount stick out of the nose cone? Was the only point made by my SVA examniner and was sorted with a 2" piece of u trim epoxy'd on. Is the windscreen a Dax one? Mine was and passed. Have you taken it for an mot to check lights and emmissions. Is well worth it.

looks great, hard to tell from a distance but do the bonnet catches have any nasty edges?
Good spot. They won't pass as is, but I have Dax supplied covers that will get them through.Liszt said:

The front suspension mounts do stick out a little. I've got lots of trim though so I'll address that when I'm in the workshop. The windscreen is a Dax item but I don't have wipers or a heater.
I've not checked the lights or emissions, but I have proof that should mean I only get smoke tested (it's a 1973 engine). I'm on a Weber carb too so hopefully I can just turn the mixture down if it's a problem. It would be good to get it on the road for a bit though to see if anything else breaks!
Thanks for the help so far. Anyone got anything else I should look out for?
Only a smoke test for the emissions is only at MOT if you have a Q reg. For the SVA you still have to pass an emmission test for pre 95 none cat'd engines.
You "may" have a problem with your harnesses passing through the seats as the tester can interprete the seat as being load bearing as the belt mounts are lower than the seats holes. I have noticed a couple of westfield guy's have had this problem but is does seem to be a personal interpritation by the tester so fingers crossed.
I have also had a friend fail because the digi-dash does not say MPH when reading the speed but that may also be tester related.
Also make sure that the fuel hose you have used states on the hose that it is for fuel.
Very nice looking car who made the exhaust?

Thanks for all the information Barry. There was someone with a Rush who had the harness hole problem too. The solution was to just unthread the harnesses from the harness holes in the seat and just wear them over the top!
Interesting point regarding the Digidash. I think I can demonstrate that it reads in MPH by showing the tester the menu that you select the speed in. I guess this is one of the quirks of the SVA. I know of someone who failed because the tester said the Digidash didn't say what its maximum speed was, despite is being quoted on the start up sequence of the dash. ETB had to write a letter in the end I think.
I'm a little worried about the emissions. The way I read the rules was that the engine is assessed against its proven age, which is rounded down to the first of January of that year. For me that would be 1973, and therefore a smoke test only. This is the first I've heard of it being any different, so I'll look through the manual again to see where I stand. Thanks for alerting me to the potential problem!

I spoke to Justin this evening about the Digidash failure - he said that SVA Technical say that the tester was wrong, but he's going to put a little sticker on it for the test anyway (rather than have an argument).
The emissions - you will need proof of the age of the engine, otherwise it's tested to the current standards (I didn't have proof - but then the engine was 2003, which are the current standards anyway).
And remember - they are always right: my examiner was definitely being unfairly taxed because he owned a second home in the Mediterranean. Oh yes
(wasn't exactly like that though).

The speedo not saying mph I think that may have been a tester issue as my ETB Digi Dash also does not say mph and some SVA testers can be a anal!
On the front end, the usual track rod ends need to be covered and also the coil overs do they have a nut that is adjusted by a c spanner? If so they will also need to be covered.
I found before the SVA check the car thoroughly if anything looks sharp or could fail on a projection, cover it up. Self Almagamating tape is perfect. Basically if you turn up with a razor blade on wheels the tester is going to tear you up for arse paper, if you look like you have made an effort to make the car compliant then the tester is more likely to be more favourable.
Be really picky when looking the car over and if you think it'll be an issue cover it you can always take it off afterwards.
You will need proof of the age of the engine, most manufacturers will do this off the engine number. If it is older than 1993 (i think) it must be fuel injected and have a catalytic converter, no exceptions.

Regarding the Digidash I think I'll just take my chances. Technically everything is correct so there's no point in me second guessing any decision that may get made on the spot.
With the Rush the nose bars should exempt the vast majority of the front suspension by setting what I think in the manual is called a floor height. This is done with a 30 degree from vertical face and hits the nose bars. Provided they are correctly radiused etc then anything behind it should be fine.
All that said, you're quite right that it won't do me any harm to be sure!
Blimey, I'll be on the road again in 5 days!

Just understood what you meant by this. For the sake of making a sticker it's not worth the argument.tribbles said:

Just a shame Rover went bust! I think I've got enough information though with various books, manuals and the ages of items actually fitted to the engine. I'll find out next week...tribbles said:

Just read the SVA manual and your right if engine is older than 1st August 1975 visual smoke test only.
I never knew that!!
Just make sure your proof is "bullet proof"

That's a rather useful looking document. I've only been using a condensed version. Thanks for the link Barry!
Edited to add I don't like the sound of "Go To BET" at the end of that flow chart. Does the tester flip a coin to see if you pass in that case?

I'm pleased to announce that yesterday my Rush passed the SVA and I'm now just waiting on an inspection with the DVLA. Should happen next week or the week after, depending on the availablity of the inspector. Less than a fortnight before full legality!
Driving down to the VOSA office and back was entertaining. It was like driving thunder.
It really is like being inside a goldfish bowl.
