BMW delivery process

Can someone explain the stages a new car goes through? I guess it gets screwed together in Germany, then shipped (container or transporter?) to a port in the UK. I think they then go up to somewhere in the Midlands for prepping, before being shipped to the dealer. The car is getting shipped straight to me, so not sure it will even hit the dealer at all.
They go to Thorne near Hull, the Dealer sends up Number Plates, Tax Disc etc then Thorne deliver direct to you.
Have to say in future I will collect from the dealer as my experience was not as good as it could have been,
Car arrived dirty, driver upset 2 of my neighbors by blocking their drives when there was plenty of space to avoid it and then suggested I tell them that some people (him presumably!) have a job to do
. No tax disc holder and no Sat Nav DVD/ Manual.
Supplying dealer was very quick to resolve the missing items and offered to pay to have the Car valeted

I'm surprised they don't cover the car when it is being transported to be honest. I'm also shocked that they don't have a checklist which includes basic things like manuals and a tax disc holder.
Do deliveries happen all the time? My dealer said if I picked it up it would need to be a Thurs, as they only get deliveries on Weds.
I don't have much of a choice on picking it up to be honest as it will take a day away from me that is best spent doing other things at the moment.

It was in a covered transport but there were two cars in there and mine was the lower of the two, both had had a superficial wash before loading the day before and on arrival my car was covered in white water/ delivery wax streaks/ spots that had dripped off the car above
They did say they'd call to let me know delivery time although ot be fair they'd said it would be Morning, the driver called at 8.15 to say he was 10 minutes away, cue rushed get up!!!

Just thought I'd update this - I've been told that the cars only go direct from Thorne to customers if they're ordered from BMW Park Lane, which is owned by BMW GB.
Also if you order say a MINI from north oxford dealer and it's made nearby, the car still gets transported to thorn, wax on wax off then transported back to oxford. 
Ultimately depends on what model you order BMW wise. X5 & Z4's are built in spartanburg america so you've to wait for the boat to come in & there's no swimming out ot it either.
