Hi,

Can anyone tell me what parts availability is like for the M535i? From what I've heard it's largely the same as the regular 5 series of the era?

I'm thinking about getting a track day car and noticed these go for less than a half decent e30 3 series....

Chris.

(Virtually) Everything is available without difficulty.

I also have a complete car that I'm using as a donor car for an M535i project I'm currently working on...there will be quite a lot of 'stuff' left over from this car once the project is complete. The donor car will be taken away as scrap at the end of the day so if you have any requirements let me know.

If it's a track day car you're after, here's one you might be interested in:

:clicky:

As Derin says, you can still get a majority of parts from dealers, or from breakers/Ebay.

Actually it was that car that prompted the question! I'd love to have that as a track toy - fast, RWD and a little bit more retro appeal than the usual 205 GTIs etc. Sadly, I could only do it on a part exchange basis at the moment and understandably the seller isn't interested. If it's still around when I've cleared some space I may well be giving him a call.....

So, now we've ascertained that parts aren't a problem, my next question is....

Would they make a good track car? I'm looking to have fun rather than set times, how much work do you reckon would be required to turn a mechanically sounds M535i into a track car?

Well, the one that Dan posted appears to be done, ready to go and "plug 'n play"! There is no way you could do all of that for what the chap is asking! If it's a track car for 'fun' that £1000 would seem (to me) a complete bargain!

You can sink one hell of a lot more than that into an E28! Believe me...I'm doing it as we speak!

Sure you'll have a lot of fun with an M535i on a track...but if £1000 is too much (without p/x'ing) is being on a track really , all other costs that this may incur considered, the right thing for you at this present time?

Albeit with different objectives in mind , I am currently staring down the double-barrel of RESTRORATION costs of two E28s that are SEVERAL multiples of that car's price...that's not for both...that's EACH!

I mean, my two young sons drive karts (4-stroke...so cheap to run) at a track that is but 5 mins drive from our house...but if our budget was below £1000 I doubt they'd be enjoying that privilege.

Currently doing two E28s, John (528i and an M535i)...and we're still months away!

If I'm diligent and lucky (!) the silver 528i may be finished before Xmas. All the mechanical work is already done and it's away now at the paint-shop for the next three or four weeks I hope. Then a few weeks with me of re-fitting, re-doing the engine bay again and final detailing etc etc...Actually, I've just realised Xmas is wishful thinking! confused

Still...6 months work from when I got it and hopefully it should be really nice! I worry sbout saying what the costs have been in case my wife reads this...but they've been spiralling! Looking like £5K in restoration costs at the moment...

Have just come in from the garage having spent 12 hours on the M535i today. Some months back I decided it would be best without the plastic bodykit but retaining just the rear spoiler and the wheel-arch extensions ("a la M5 and 535iSE).

I left removing the front airdam until last (i.e today!). I was confident there was a normal front bumper under the plastic (which there is) and thought I would just remove it, taking out the lower lamps and then re-slot them straight into a normal lower valance and "away we go!"

Trouble is...M535i ain't got one!!! eek

Checked on the donor car I have...nope definitely ain't got one! Duh!

Thus when it eventually goes to the paintshop it'll have to be transported (no lights) and it's about 50 miles away. banghead

Still, I then consoled myself by changing and repairing the front door trims on the M535i. The car had hideous great big 80's (actually probably 90's) round speakers hacked and screwed into the door trims. I fixed the shrinkage on the ones from the donor M535i and fitted those...I think I did a nice, clean job! If I say so myself biggrin

I don't see the M535i being finished before next Spring at this rate...and God knows what the costs are going to be!

But then that's probably going to be "it" for me with E28s...I'll feel like I've done "my bit" in terms of saving some really nice examples.

Anyway, here are some random pics of work in progress:

Crikey mate it looks like you've a lot of work there. Please keep me posted on the progress as your pictures and write-up are always a fantastic read.....and of corse it's got nothing to do with me having a huge soft spot for the `square rigger`.
Will give you a call soon mate when i'm back from abroad.
