This happened to me a year or so ago, but I've never really understood what went on, and thought I'd post for a few comments.

I was driving at night on a local (Loch Lomond) road, famous for lots of fast bikers, and a single carriageway NSL road (60mph). I noticed a single headlight approaching from a distance back, and soon a motorbike was following me. After a few miles he was dangerously close (or so it appeared in my rear-view mirror), and I kept a constant speed for a while. He never overtook, which is unusual for the bikers over there, and I'm sure my speed crept up to 70mph, but never over 75mph.

I decided to pull into a left-hand junction to let him pass, so I indicated in plenty of time, slowed gradually, showing my brake-lights etc, and pulled into a left-hand road. The bike slowed too, passed me, and at this point I saw it was a marked police bike. Eek! As I pulled in, he slowed to 20mph or so, looked back at me and waved his left hand in an up and down motion, before driving off. I took that to mean "Watch your speed, son", but is that what he meant?

Are you sure your brake lights were working? He might have been saying "why didn't you tell me you were slowing down?"

Just a thought...

Are you sure it wasn't "Coooeee, I like tight leather pants, do you want to rub me in talk, ya big hairy man"?

Or am I misunderstanding?

Yea, brake lights were definitely working (unless they were working before, stopped working there, and have been working again ever since smile)

Being honest, that was my initial thought, that he was a bit pissed at me slowing down or pulling in, since he was very close. When I've got a bike anywhere near me on the road, I get nervous to the point of probably doing everything a bit too obviously! I mean, I tapped to show my brake lights, slowed down very gradually, indicated early, etc. Plus I wasn't over the speed limit when he approached me from behind (fnar fnar). I know it's wrong, but I did speed up a little when he was on my tail. At night, especially in the rear view mirror, I realise how things can look closer than they are, especially a single headlight.

No biggie, but I've never really fully understood what he meant. I do now, so thanks guys.

I imagine he was just suggesting that in future you watch your speed.

According to plod there is no such thing as tailgaiting, no sorry let me clarify that statement.
It's tailgaiting if a MOP is doing it but not if plod is doing it, due to plod being "driving gods".

So if you slam on the anchors to avoid the small bird that ran into the road with the BIB behind you and they dont stop intime is it still their fault or are they above that rule aswell?

Ever tried claiming against a police force when they cause an accident? Heard some pretty horrendous stories about that

If you slam on the brakes to avoid a small animal and cause an accident it's your fault...you only emergency stop for PEOPLE, controlled heavy braking for vehicles, and slow if possible for animals.

Quite true, your accident would be your fault, but that does not absolve the tailgater of blame for his accident, whoever he may be. Tailgating, whoever does it, it stupid and dangerous, and is not the sort of thing any highly trained police driver would ever do rolleyes

I thought bikers were supposed to have much better roadcraft on account of their greater vulnerability?!?
