Looking for a camera case thats ok as carry on luggage and to keep my kit in the rest of the time. At the moment trying to decide between the Tamrac Speedroller 2 and a Peli 1510. The Peli's obviously a but more expensive but thinking the extra protection would be worthwhile.

Anyone got either or any other options to further confuse me smile

Thanks in advance.

Hey
I have the 1510 and its built like a tank fully waterproof (sailed across some of the puddles at the pod at the main event this year )and if it does leak peli will replace EVERY thing that gets damaged its also strong enough to stand/sit on with out a problem . the downsides are its fing heavy to carry and it looks expensive

carnt speak for the speedrollers but if i was buying again I'd go peli

I've got a peli 1510 too and it's fantastic. Survived three flights on my USA trip last year in the hold unscathed. Really good protection and also survived being used as a step while i fixed my hot water tank at home.

Pelis are simply too heavy to be Carry-On by the time you have most of your kit inside. They will, however, do a fabulous job in the hold - the definitive Hard Case.
Lightware are a nice alternative too, extremely tough with a few carry-on options.
I currently travel with a Tenba Gemini PG17-C that gives me enough space for Mac, 5D, 4 lenses, PocketDrive, Batteries, Filters, Cables, Cards, iPod etc.
Even managed to squeeze the 'Blad, three lenses and PhaseOne P30+ back in there on a few occasions. Cheap too - about £130+VAT iirc, from Teamwork Digital in London.

There are a few 'design touches' on this bag that don't work - the monitor shade is useless, (and not removable) and the laptop side of the bag doesn't open far enough for practical use of the Mac in-situ anyway.
However - the genius touch is that you can separate the two halves for when you want to leave the Mac & accessories in the hotel safe / car boot and just go with the cameras and a pocketful of CF cards...

(Yes, my 5D is taped and the flash is Nikon! Yellow Peli holds G-Tech Mini 80GB FW800 HD)

Thanks for your comments everyone, think I'll go for the Peli at the moment, mainly to keep everything secure and I'll use my backpack for carry on when needed.

If you're looking at Peli then Storm Cases are an alternative. Cheaper and in different sizes. I've got a smaller storm case as well as the Peli as Peli don't do a size that'll fit my 1d with the 24-105L attached whereas storm do. Nowhere near the quality of Peli (used it to hammer in a tent peg and it sustained a surprising amount of damage) but half the price and will do the plane hold job fine.

Ordered a Peli and got it yesterday, initial impressions are, as said it's built like a tank!

With lid organiser fitted:

Will it all fit?:

Yes!:

Bit of customisation!:

Nice!
You'll be loving those wheels.
5 or 6 years ago, only the very largest Pelis had wheels fitted, and the others were a b!tch to carry!

good choice .... i think the "peli" holds a lifetime, no questions, guarantee.

trivia:
take care with some country's customs/airline habits .... they may raise an eyebrow to the mimic hazardous goods sticker.

I've been using Peli cases for more years than I care to mention. I must have about 15 now, from the smallest micro cases to the big wheelie ones. The case I use the most (a 1250) has been all over the world with me on countless trips. The airlines have done their best to break it (and to my surprise have chipped a few small pieces off here and there). The O ring doesn't always seat properly when I close the lid (I could easily sort this by sticking it in the lid to stop it slipping out) but it's never let me down.

I also have 2 or 3 Storm cases and I am pretty impressed by them. Cheaper than Peli but not much less in quality terms and they do have a few improvements over Peli, especially the latch system, which I find much easier to use. They seem a bit lighter too.

For checked baggage, don't consider anything else than these two brands.

I prefer the latches on the Storm too, but the plastic seems thinner on the bottom of mine (hence the damage i caused assuming it was as strong as a Peli).
On the subject of damage, we use smallish peli 1400 cases at work for sending media offsite. Our storage company has managed to snap one of the handles clean off. Still at a loss as to how they managed it.
