Hi, Just bought a Mark 4 X Reg Golf (1.4s) and have noticed that theres a slight knocking noise coming from the offside front wheel when going over rough road. This led me to think that the anti-roll bar linkages were worn and so replaced them, this didn't cure the problem.

On a "closer" listening trip, it sounds as if it's just the offside wheel but when a bump is hit on the nearside only, it transfers through to the offside. Re-iterating the thought about the rollbar bushes/links.

Has anyone else had a problem like this or can anyone shed any light on the problem?

The ARB bushes are probably gone. My 4motion is on 90k and they've been repalced twice.
Only about £20 and an easy DIY job.

Note that when the car is on a ramp they may appear to be fine but when there is load on the front wheels they knock.

They've been up on a ramp, and on the road, will it be the inner or outer bushes?

Swap the whole lot for polyurethane bushes and R32 roll bars if you're feeling flush - do it once and do it right. These things die all the damn time.

If im feeling flush, I take it these things arn't cheap!!! May just do that. (or if i had the money swap the entire car for an R32!)

Are the superflex bushes any good? just looking at http://www.vagparts.co.uk and eBay for them. Just to clarify, there the ARB Bushes not the Wishbone Bushes (although if these polys work then i'll do the front wishbones as well!)

My MK2 is superflexed up - all the bushes fitted well and went in easily.

R32 roll bars aren't *that* expensive IIRC, we fit a fair few of them to TTs here as they (like MK4 Golfs) suffer an annoying amount of body roll.

R32 bars are only a direct fit on 4wd golfs/S3'sTT's... I have got one on my 1.8T but only because I have KW coilovers which have the necessary mounting for the drop link
