I was tinkering about the other night and had a quick look at the entry lists for the next big NHRA meeting @ Las Vegas...

Top Fuel Dragster : 23 Entrants
Top Fuel Funny Car : 23 Entrants
Pro Stock Car : 29 Entrants
Super Gas : 165 Entrants yikes

I know this is the States and drag racing is bigger over there, but wow! 165 entrants kinda took me by suprise!

Not suprising really, given the size of the sport and how cheaply and easily you can build a nine second car over there now. Easily done with off the shelf parts- and they don't get raped on the cost of them like we do.

I must admit 165 is impressive bearing in mind most of them are not going to qualify.

Just dug out my old 1972 Ontario Motor Speedway Supernationals programme to check how many entrants there were in TF and FC back then; 67 in TF and 55 in FC!

One of my buddies lives in New Hampshire and has been watching racing in the USA since the 1960s. He comes over here occasionally and one of the things he loves about the sport in Europe is that Super Gas and Super Comp especially have some variety - it's not all cookie-cutter stuff and throttle stop as is the impression of these classes in the USA. Ed honestly thinks that we do SC and SG better here.

Yes, I definitely think the fact that's it's more difficult for us brings out the more creative types and therefore the variety of machinery we see is much more interesting.

Good point Jim! Must admit I had overlooked that.

Sportsman racing at national events is anything BUT cheap if you talk to the racers. They're the ones who have to pay entry fees. They also have to pay entry fees and race at so many VERY low paying divisional races just to be ABLE to enter a low paying national event. That actually holds the number of national event entrants down.

But at least over there the low paying events are just that- paying events! Whilst I'm no expert I chat with yanks most days and also hunt through various websites for parts etc. and I can't see/haven't heard of any aspect that makes it harder over there to compete (apart from maybe having a quick street car in CA).
