Thinking of swapping a 993 C4S for a 3200GT or Gransport???
Discussion
I am thinking of swapping my 993 C4S for a Maserati 3200GT or even a 4200 Gransport if my wallet will stretch. Although I am aware of servicing costs (i.e. Verdi) I am concerned about general costs of the Maser i.e. skyhook suspension, engine rebuilds etc. Has anyone got any pointers! or can offer any good advice?
p.s. I have posted this on the Porsche slot and thought I would get the other side of the story from you people.

Another vote here for the 4200. They may not be quite so pretty as the 3200's and you don't get those sublime boomerang rear lights or bonnet vents, but a well-maintained, late model 4200 should cost no more in servicing than your 993, especially if you find a good one to begin with and don't mind using a decent indie specialist to maintain it. From what I've seen a 3200 can be a bit of a lottery but there are some great, trouble-free ones out there. I went for the 4200 in the end as I wanted a bit more peace of mind. Thus far it's been superb.
It is worth driving all the variants; 3200, 4200 & GS do have similar looks but are very different to drive. 3200s are a completely different animal with their turbo punch in the back, the 4200 is more progressive but still insanely quick & the GS feels more modern still. They will all make your 993 seem pedestrian, and small. Masers are a lot bigger, with proper rear seats, but are still pretty nimble for their size and once you get addicted to the loud pedal you won't see much more than 15mpg. My missus somehow manages 25mpg in her 993 C4S and she doesn't hang about.
You'll no doubt hear a great many horror stories about Masers - I did but they were mostly from people who don't own & use them. Try a few, speak to some dealers and also check out the postings on maseratiforum.co.uk In comparison to Porkers they feel a lot more special, and are a rarer sight on the roads. I love driving the C4S, and it is unquestionably one of the best looking 911s, but if I had to choose just one it would be the Maser.

Owned mine for 6 years now and other than rear tyres you should get away with circa £1500 pa service costs etc. Other than the odd little niggle (which you get with any car) I've had no problems. Parts can be expensive but if you buy the right car you shouldn't need any. Ensure, whichever you go for has a full quality history, ALL the keys, and if a 3200, either SS rear boxes or fairly new oem's (they only last approx 2 -3 years).
Search on here re engine failures and you will find some posts, that is what a forum like this is for, so you would expect too, but they are very few and far between give the number manufactured.
If you expect a lot of town driving then go for an auto. The performance difference is neglible between manual and auto but your left leg will thank you for it.
good choice by the way. You'll love every minute if you buy the right car.

Great post. It was me that referred you across to here from the Porsche forum. I'm too recent a Maser owner to be able to give you any comprehensive and meaningful feedback on numbers. I let my heart rule my head (in some respects) and went for a Spyder after lusting after one for the last three years and not taking my chance previously. There's not much more to add to this post other than to reinforce the feeling of presence that the car has. It is stupendously quick feeling and you don't see many around (queue quips re that's because they're all in the garages) but they do have a sense of occasion about them.
I have owned a 3200 GT manual and now have a Gransport and whilst the 3200 is in a lot of ways more fun, the GS is a far more complete car and far better if you are going to use it regularly including in the wet.
I have not owned a 4200 but have driven them and it is still very good but a Gransport is better if you can stretch to it.
