Problem with electrics on E39

[off_again]

Not sure what is going on, but a few times now the car will cut out, the hazard warning lights will come on and the interior lights too. Stop, lock it, unlock it and its fine again. Any suggestions as to what is going on?

Actually, we are seeing how long it lasts before something nasty goes wrong. Worth £1k of new money so bit of a bargain banger so need to be realistic. However, did a bit of Googling last night and it appears that the ignition barrel seems to be the most likely problem area. Anyone know how easy it is to get the part and replace it?

Don't know if this helps but those symptoms are exactly what happens when you have a shunt in an E39 (I know, I had one . A couple of airbags deployed, lights & hazards came on, radio went off too). Maybe your car thinks you're having an accident? Does it happen when you hit a bump by any chance?
