I wrote a couple of weeks back about my 99 2.5 TDI A6 Avant having performance problems and driving like a bus. Having checked MAF, EGR, Filters, injectors, etc. etc. it transpires the spindle and bearings in the turbo have had it so the whole unit, plus breathers, etc. have got to be replaced. ARGHHH!!! As it stands the whole lot's going to cost north of 1500 quid (with work also mentioned below), but the A6 is a classy, well built lump and will ferry the wife and kids for many a good year yet.

If that's not bad enough, the Cat it more coked up than Pete Doherty due to the turbo problem, so the mechanic said he'd just split down the exhaust, rip out the Cat and weld it up again to save me even more expense of getting ne new Cat too.

Apparently the TDI's (in fact all Diesels) don't need them and the MOT measured smokiness for emmissions anyway, not dealt with by the Cat. If that's true, why do Audi fiot them in the 1st place? I'm now baffled as well as broke...

Get a second opinion.
The engine breathers block on these car, giving classic turbo knackerd symptoms, smoke on idle etc etc.
When the car is running on idle is the crank case pressure high when you remove the oil filler cap?
If you have a lot of play on the turbo then it will need replacing. There will be a small amount of rock of the shaft in the turbo.
Check the above first.

True, for a diesel MOT it is just a smoke test not emissions.

Audi fit cats because it is the law!
