Omex Shift Light Sequential
Discussion
Has anyone on the forum fitted shift lights?
I know Steve Heath has a set in his Griff on the steering column, I have just installed an Omex Shift Light Sequential unit in the Chim 500, the shift lights as a HUD just below the driver’s sun visor mount and the unit fits tidily within the dash, though if it had a longer cable it could be placed under dash and be more accessible for adjustments.
The problem is, that although I can find the maximum rev limit on a 5 litre RV8 (6250 rpm ?) I cannot find the optimum point to change gear and to that matter the pre-lag to put in to take account of revs still increasing in the time needed to make the gear change.
Appreciate if experience here can advise of where to set these points and the optimum gap to set between the lights too (variable but currently 600 rpm).
I would like to utilise the optimum power band, without thrashing the pants before the Red Light. On the unit there are 4 lights:
First green is currently set to 3000 RPM
Second green 3600 RPM
Amber 4200 RPM
Red 4800 RPM.
I consider these settings are too low, but on a positive side is, that the first green can be used to keep the engine below 3000RPM when warming up and also reminds me that I am starting to exceed legal motorway speed, 3100RPM seems to equal about 80 MPH! but its flickering when in 5th will possibly be a nuisance when the novelty value wears thin!

I've got one in my Chim. I set the gap to 400 rpm and the red comes on about 5.5k. Your optimum change point will depend how your engine is set up and how you like to drive. I don't like to really thrash the nuts off mine so there's no way I'd have set the red to come on at 6250!

I installed the main box on the inside of the flap above the battery.
It's down to preference really. My first light starts to flicker at about 4100ish (90 in fifth which is my wake up call sometimes!)
I did find for the first few drives of having it, it was a bit of a PITA with the lit range too wide. Try and find a segment leading up to your change point that you're happy with.

The optimum change up for maximum performance depends on the cam and the gearing, but typically it will be in the region of 6000 - 6200 rpm. However, the last few hundred rpm are giving you very little performance gain and increasing the wear and tear on the engine tremendously. 5000 rpm would be a perfectly sensible change-up point for normal fast driving, perhaps 5500 for the odd occasion when you a deperate to save a tenth of a second. If you need a shift light to tell you when to change gear then you probably aren't looking at the tacho which means you're unlikely to see the shift light - it really needs to be good and bright and in your line of sight when you're looking at the road. (The same goes for your oil pressure warning light.)
Gents,
Thanks for all the helpful posts; I will now raise the shift point to a higher RPM set up.
I appreciate the point that it is hard to glance at the dash when really going for it and all concentration should be focussed forward through the windscreen.
By positioning the lights at above head-height (approx level of sun visor mounts) I find that these are well in the peripheral vision, the LEDs being so bright and directional they cannot be missed even when attention is elsewhere.
