Ok Ive seriously got the hump today

After having a run of bad luck throughout today which is really pushing me close to the edge of my patience, I thought I better ask for a little assistance before I start dribbling and rocking back & forth

Today the 10D threw up a Err 99 message and refuses to play ball

The symptoms are you click to take a photo, the mirror flips up, the camera makes a stupid noise, the mirror stays in raise position or has trouble lowering until power is switched off

Now I dont make a living from my work, but I cant be without my camera for too long so I need to get this sorted sharpish (no pun intended)

Has anyone had this happen? How was it resolved?

Whats it likely to be and how much will it cost??

Thanks in advance

Scott

Have you tried the camera with different lenses on it?

I had a canon 75-300 that would cause E99's on my old 20D, it would intermittently die on me (normally at the most inopportune moment).

I still use the 20D as a backup camera, but have not had a single issue now in approx 18months using other lenses than the 75-300, which has brought me to determine that the lens was causing the issue...

Also if you can get your hands on a PCB eraser give the contacts a clean up (be very very careful when doing the camera contacts though to make sure you get no crap inside the camera - do it upside down so gravity does it's job, and I've also had a hoover running to give a little added virtual gravity - no too close to the body but close enough to pull any debris away from cleaning the contacts)...

This sounds very similar to the fault I had with the 300D - though err 99 can mean anything from a pin snapped on the card slot to a dodgy lens to a knackered shutter. Mine was the latter I think - I was quoted £175 + VAT for a new shutter mechanism (9000 shots, the camera rated at ca. 10000!) However I think the 10D is rated at 100,000 shots so should be more robust. Try cleaning the contacts as said, use modern (not older sigma lenses that maynot be 100% compatible) canon lenses. IIRC there's a little pin that actuates the mirror that can snap - there are instgructions on t'internet to fix this.

In the end I sold it as a kit for £280 on ebay, labelled stating the fault. Faultless ones were going for around £320 at the time so not too bad. Switched to Nikon after that...

Sorry it's not the best news I'm afraid. Sorry.

Oh it doesnt sound good

Ive cleaned the contacts with an eraser and no joy Im affraid

The camera went captuski while I was using the Canon 50mm prime too frown

It had only done 7800 shots when I bought it and I think I may have just taken it over 10,000
